A sportfishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge on Prince of Wales island in Craig Alaska for the above dates. The past three days we had 14 anglers, weather and fishing was very good. Wind died down and ocean conditions were very good and catch rates were great landing limits of Coho and Halibut all three days as well as limits of Ling cod. Coho were of a very large average of at least 10 pounds the largest being 17 pounds.

Boats or lodges that kept to the inside waters struggled for limits, offshore was the place to be this past 3 days.

Alaska sport fishing report for the Craig area on Prince of Wales Island for the above dates. My report for our Alaska fishing lodge for the 3rd week of August is a positive fishing report. Last three days fishing has been as good as can be expected with limits of big Coho and great bottom fishing. We didn’t fish for King salmon but focused on our Coho’s which some made the 15 pound size with more of a 10 pound average.

Getting off shore Coho many of those fish are destined for Canadian rivers and so their large size is reflected by the size of the river they are bound for, but also many are from the Klawock river hatchery POWHA (now under SSRAA). Commercial boats are now seeing more big Coho showing up, but most commercial trollers are focused on King salmon as their quota is still being filled and Kings are bringing $100 each so they are trying to get their share of the valuable fish, the Coho being worth between $10.00 and $20.00 each.
We are optimistic to finish with a strong sport fishing season!

My fishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge in Craig Alaska for the above dates. Last 4 days fishing was again good and then died off or got much slower the last day for this group. The first two days we saw limits of Silver or Coho salmon then the third day drop off dramatically. Many boats came back to the dock without limits of Coho the last day as boats searched all the points and usual drags hoping to find the fish in some kind of numbers.

A few King salmon are still being caught and heard the seiners were catching big ones off Granite Point this last opener. Granite has been too rough to check out lately due to weather. Trollers are struggling to find Coho salmon, but that could change at any time if fish move into the area. We are hoping for that change as we still have a few weeks left of fishing.
Thanks for reading my report and will post more pictures on Facebook page.

Craig Alaska sport fishing report for August 8th thru the 10th

Craig Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for the above dates. Last three days fishing was really good for Coho the first 2 days then drastically tapered off yesterday with a average catch rate of less than half limits of Coho (that is a guestimate of mine only). Our boats landed about 70 percent of our limit of Coho for the day but chatter on the radio was much less due to boats running trying to find fish.

If you found a few fish you needed to stick it out and grind what you could. Bottom fishing is still good but weather has been an issue due to wind and ocean conditions. Overall outlook is a bit bleak coming from the commercial boats not doing well off shore which is where our fish come from. We are all praying that will change in the next few days. Time will tell and as the saying goes “all is well that ends well”.
Thanks for reading my report, more photos on our Facebook page.

Kingfisher Lodge Alaska sportfishing report for August 4th thru the 6th.

My Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the above dates. Past 3 days we had 18 guests targeting Coho salmon and Halibut with 2 GAF halibut on the agenda.

Limits of Coho were readily available but not without a price to pay due to (as Ray Troll’s tee shirt says) “Humpies from Hell”! That was exactly what it was with some times using 20 dozen bait herring to land 36 coho due to the large number of Pinks or Humpies in the mix.

Guests had fun though landing lots of salmon and we threw in a few King salmon to spice up the deal along with two 110 plus pound GAF halibut. Many boats were struggling for limits of Coho, which shows there are spotty schools of fish moving through, but we were able to land on the fish and work through the Pinks to get what we needed these past 3 days. Weather was northwest 25 to 30 knots making the ocean lumped up and to those not used to the rougher water sea sickness was their lot.
Still knocking on wood hoping the fish to keep coming. Be back in 3 more days, thanks for reading my report.

Alaska fishing lodge report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig for July 31st thru August 3rd. Coho and King salmon runs remain strong throughout the Craig area the past 3 days.

Pahor family with another great catch!

We focused on Coho limits and did not attempt to catch our King salmon although from reports those boats that focused on King salmon were able to get limits or if not close to limits of King salmon. Bottom fishing remains strong as well although finding the perfect 43″ halibut is not so easy unless being lucky or time is spent. to consistently catch up towards the 43″ limit requires a commitment of at least a few hours depending on how many people on your boat. Large or oversized halibut seem to be very prolific this year as we have had to release many oversized fish from over 43″ to well over 72″.
We are looking forward to seeing you who are yet to come and hope the fish runs remain strong throughout the summer. Thanks for reading my report.

My fishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge in Craig Alaska on the outer coast of Prince of Wales Island. The past 4 days we had 16 anglers on our 3 boats focused mostly on Silver or Coho salmon.

Coho’s seemed in good numbers with limits fairly easy to land with the fish a good average size of around 8 pounds which is good for this time of year. Pink salmon are in fairly abundant numbers as you find out trying to get the Coho getting into large schools of the Pinks at times landing up to 6 Pinks to one Coho, other times a much better ratio. Overall we landed limits of Coho the first 3 days and the last and 4th day we put our time into King salmon and Halibut, looking for a 43 inch size to the Halibut as our goal. We invested an average of 3 hours a day for 6 halibut which was time well spent.
Captain Nils boat landed limits of King salmon on the last day and as well as Kings other days with the largest at 35 pounds. We landed a small handful of Kings as well as Joel his best day limiting on Kings.

Overall the fishing is pretty good in the Craig area with most boats limiting on the species they focus on weather it is King salmon or Coho.  It appears that Coho numbers are consistent, still knocking on wood that fish numbers remain strong throughout the summer.

Thanks for reading my report. I will post more pictures on our Facebook page if you would like to see more.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales island, Craig Alaska for the above dates. The past three days weather was blown up with winds 20 to 25 knots out of the south with some rain. Ocean swells reached 11 foot so we stayed inside all three days landing limits of Coho salmon, some King salmon and Halibut.

My boat landed 3 Kings for the 3 days. We boated 2 GAF halibut one on Joel’s boat and one on my boat. Most boats in the Craig area landed limits of silvers some landing limits of King salmon. Rough water kept many boats from fishing the outside waters but my guess is most guests left happy with their catches fishing in lodges in the Craig area. We are optimistic that more fish are moving in as many points of land fish seem to be showing up, that is the Coho salmon.
Thanks for reading my fishing report and I will post more photos on our Facebook page. I will be back in 4 days!

July 18th thru the 20th of July fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge

Stutz, Hutcherson family and friends with a remarkable catch of fish.

Stutz, Hutcherson family and friends with a remarkable catch GAF of fish. (GAF stands for Guided Angler Fish a pre-purchased fish from a commercial halibut permit holder).

My Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the above dates. The past 3 days fishing was again exceptional for both salmon and bottom fish. We had two groups in one with two families for a total of 12 and another with a group of 4. We started out day one fishing for salmon off the Tree spot for salmon,

Fred Young group with a great catch of fish!

Captain Nils boat did very well but myself and Joel didn’t fare as well for salmon as the fish seemed tight lipped so we decided to fish for our pre-purchased GAF Halibut.

Hutcherson family with their awesome catch!

Hutcherson family with their awesome catch!

My group had purchased 12 GAF fish so we decided to go try and find some big ones (they decided not to use the total they purchased since we caught all big ones). David searches the world for large critters either on land or in the water, (he has fished on the Wicked Tuna boats a few times looking for the big Tuna as well as Australia for big Black Marlin!) I have fished this spot many times over the years with David and once again began fishing this highly productive area. We dropped our gear and within a half hour were fighting very large halibut and in the end landed some very large GAF fish but only a few undersized fish. We released 4 or so fish from 70 to 120 pounds as David was looking for one in the 300 pound range. We didn’t land any that large but the largest was 255 pounds at 78 inches in length.
Captain Joel also landed some nice GAF fish and releasing one in excess of 200 pounds since the Hutcherson family wanted smaller better eating halibut , as well as his regular limit of halibut.

20160720_142946-1600x1200
Day 2 and 3 were salmon days so we focused on Coho and King salmon landing limits of both on day 2 and 3,  I was short a couple King salmon on day 3 but had used up 20 dozen bait weeding through the pink salmon…ugg, what an ordeal! Overall fishing was outstanding and I understand most boats in the Craig area were limiting on King salmon and Coho for the most part. The Power trollers were complaining that the Coho were in low numbers off the coast which gives us concern, but we will remain optimistic that they will continue to show up in numbers.
Thanks for reading my report! Until next time.

Don Blackmond group slaying the fish!

Fishing report for Alaska Kingfisher Lodge in Craig for the past three days has been very good still as runs remain strong for both King salmon and Coho salmon. King salmon may appear to be in smaller numbers but that is due to the larger number of Coho, Pinks and Dog salmon showing up. More time is spent landing the 6 fish limit on the Coho and with Pink salmon also being landed it takes away from King salmon opportunity.

Weyerhaeuser family with another great catch!

My boat was short 4 Kings out of the 18 available to my anglers so my guys ended up with 14 King salmon 88 Coho out of the 108 they could have caught.
Weather was windy at 20 knots out of the northwest so boats were trying to avoid the wind and seek more protected fishing areas. Wind for the next three days looks lighter which will allow us more areas to fish.
Thanks for reading my report and check out the Facebook for more photos.
