Craig Alaska fishing report for July 7th thru the 13th, 2018

Dowdle group with a GAF day fishing!

Craig Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for the week of July 7th thru the 13th. I missed the first group report and now combining the two groups reports for the above dates. King salmon fishing remained slow but we were able to limit on the one King salmon per guest last two groups. By the second group arriving on the 10th we had one slower day and finished strong landing all King salmon limits and the best two days were 15 Coho and 13 Coho for one boat. Each day is a new day and one day we will see limits of Coho or Silver salmon. Some of the commercial trollers are landing up to 100 per day off shore so they are on their way. Bottom fishing remains strong and good halibut fishing depending on water conditions and where we are as far as getting to the halibut spots. The boats are out today so will give a report in 3 days coming. The top picture is the Steve Delamore group with a great catch of fish. Thanks for reading my reports.

Prince of Wales sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska June 30th 2018

Fishing report for June 27th thru the 29th of June 2018. The past 3 days King salmon fishing was good enough landing 45 out of 48 King salmon for the 16 guests. King salmon have been in most traditional areas off Noyes, Baker and Sumez islands with Sumez island being the most productive. The largest King I have heard of was caught by Catch a King charters at 50 lbs..  Our largest King salmon was caught yesterday at 37 pounds with a 35 with it. Bottom fishing remains strong landing limits of Ling cod and Yellow eye as well as black sea bass. Weather has remained cool with some wind but ocean conditions have been very tolerable.

The Canadians with their big King salmon, Congrats Lloyd and Dave!

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 17th – 19th, 2017

A close knit group!

Dave with a big halibut and rare sun.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report for the days of August 17th through the 19th. Prince of Wales sport fishing off Craig has remained stable and the past 3 days weather was a bit tough with wind and rain but the beauty of Craig area is being able to fish inside spots and not have to fish the open ocean. We were able to get most if not all our limits last few day for our three boats. Day 2 we were short a few silvers on each boat other days limits were had. Weather will be an issue for the next few days as well and all the folks out need to put on their tough side and weather the weather, although the 22nd looks pretty good on the forecast. If the fish are biting so be it this is S.E. Alaska a rainforest and that’s why we have fish because we have water. Not much else to say but season is winding down with 6 more fishing days ahead, should be good.

Nicer part of the ocean.

Check out the Facebook page for a few photos of last 3 days.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 4th – 6th, 2017

Just how big is this King? Probably not as big here as it will be in Boise.

Trophy GAF halibut

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 4th – 6th, 2017 located on Prince of Wales island, Craig Alaska. We are now in our last month of our guide and lodge service and this past three days was exceptional with all boats landing limits of Kings, Coho and halibut. The fish are all of respectable size with our largest King salmon at 33 pounds, largest Coho 15 pounds, largest halibut 121 pounds! All lodge and charter boats in the Craig area are mostly landing limits of Coho and many are landing limits of King salmon as well. Soon to change on the King salmon as the Commercial troll fleet will have a King salmon opener in the next week, just not sure of the dates. Weather has been exceptional with one day reaching high 70’s, little wind on the ocean so our last day was very nice on the water. The last day was exceptional for King salmon after limiting on King salmon we landed a total of 18 Kings trying to get our limit of Coho’s which we eventually did. Check out our Facebook page for more pictures and look forward to seeing all those folks coming here in the next few weeks. Crossing our fingers, saying our prayers that the weather and fishing remain good! Thanks for reading my reports.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 26th – 28th, 2017

Kings for everyone!

OGrady, OHare family’s

Craig Alaska sport fishing report for July 26th thru the 28th on the southwest side of Prince of Wales island. Salmon fishing remains strong as both Coho and King salmon have been being caught in good numbers in the Craig area. Limits for both species have been fairly easy to procure the past couple of weeks although sometimes the King salmon are a crap shoot, it seems the past few days there were more king salmon getting caught. August 1st will shut down the Yellow eye rockfish limits until I believe the 27th of the month so don’t plan on being able to keep a Yellow eye. Ling cod and halibut the same limits. ADF&G feels the fishery needs to be closed (although there have been large numbers of the Yellow fish where ever we go) they believe there is a reduction in numbers, we can only trust that their management is correct and erring on conservative measures is always best on such a long lived fish, but we also hope it isn’t just for allocation issues. Klawock river hatchery now operated by SSRAA and run by Jeff Lundberg are doing a great job and we attribute the strong Coho runs to this hatchery. Jeff says this run is looking like the 2013 run when there were lots of fish, we are hoping it continues, great job Jeff! Check out our Facebook for more pictures.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 13th 2017

A great day of fishing!

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 13th 2017. Ok so I haven’t been posting fishing reports not because fishing hasn’t been good since it has been a good summer so far. Most guests went home with limits of King salmon throughout the month of June minus a few here or there but overall on a scale of one to ten I would say it has been a 6 for number of fish caught. Halibut fishing up to now has been a scratch and all lodges are struggling to find a steady supply of quality halibut. Putting in time is what it takes to get anything next to the 44″ maximum and many lodges are probably falling short on that, my guess is the average halibut caught is around 32 inches and that may be stretching it. There are a fair number of halibut in the 46 inch to 55 inch range but they outside the slot size to retain. Extra large halibut also seem to be in smaller numbers, those in the 68″ and above size. We have been landing quite a few in the 55 to 58″ size. Some of these I believe to be large males so hopefully there are still those large females that lay the 4.5 million

eggs each year, I feel some concern about these numbers.

July fishing we have done well with King salmon and since July 1st we say a decline as the commercial fleet took many thousands of King salmon but since they shut down the King salmon fishing our numbers have been returning so limits have been possible and most boats are limiting on King salmon. Guests and Kingfisher Lodge here in Craig have been able to limit on King salmon these past few weeks.
Coho fishing has been pretty fair landing 4 to 6 Coho per angler the past few days. I will try to post pictures on our Facebook page but will include a few here and try to update my fishing report every 3 days.

June fishing at its best!

Awesome fishing

Thanks for reading and look forward to seeing you here this summer!!

Alaska sportfishing report for August 28th thru the 31st.

My fishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge in Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales island. With the season tapering off we only had one group of 6 people at the lodge and thus only running one boat. Coho fishing for the last three days was good with a few short the first and third day. However this was made up by the large size ranging from 12-16 lbs. that allowed everybody to go home with 2 fish boxes each.

Nice set of halibut and a lot of coho

Halibut fishing was very good, allowing us to get limits every day except for the first day where we ended being one short. However we had to release 4 oversized halibut with the biggest being 140 lbs. Russell Ruder was the lucky chosen one that had to tangle with the halibut for approximately 35 minutes before we were able to release it.

That was all for this season, now we are off to the Alaska Range to go for sheep and moose hunting. To sum it all up it was a great season and we wish all our guests the best until we see them again next year.

Steve Peace group with a great catch of fish.

A sportfishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge on Prince of Wales island in Craig Alaska for the above dates. The past three days we had 14 anglers, weather and fishing was very good. Wind died down and ocean conditions were very good and catch rates were great landing limits of Coho and Halibut all three days as well as limits of Ling cod. Coho were of a very large average of at least 10 pounds the largest being 17 pounds.

Boats or lodges that kept to the inside waters struggled for limits, offshore was the place to be this past 3 days.

Alaska fishing lodge report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig for July 31st thru August 3rd. Coho and King salmon runs remain strong throughout the Craig area the past 3 days.

Pahor family with another great catch!

We focused on Coho limits and did not attempt to catch our King salmon although from reports those boats that focused on King salmon were able to get limits or if not close to limits of King salmon. Bottom fishing remains strong as well although finding the perfect 43″ halibut is not so easy unless being lucky or time is spent. to consistently catch up towards the 43″ limit requires a commitment of at least a few hours depending on how many people on your boat. Large or oversized halibut seem to be very prolific this year as we have had to release many oversized fish from over 43″ to well over 72″.
We are looking forward to seeing you who are yet to come and hope the fish runs remain strong throughout the summer. Thanks for reading my report.

Alaska fishing lodge fishing report for July 14th thru the 16th.

Don Blackmond group slaying the fish!

Don Blackmond group slaying the fish!

Fishing report for Alaska Kingfisher Lodge in Craig for the past three days has been very good still as runs remain strong for both King salmon and Coho salmon. King salmon may appear to be in smaller numbers but that is due to the larger number of Coho, Pinks and Dog salmon showing up. More time is spent landing the 6 fish limit on the Coho and with Pink salmon also being landed it takes away from King salmon opportunity.

Past three days two groups on Captain Joel’s and Captain Nils boat got their limits of King salmon and the last day limited on Coho.

Weyerhaeuser family with another great catch!

Weyerhaeuser family with another great catch!

My boat was short 4 Kings out of the 18 available to my anglers so my guys ended up with 14 King salmon 88 Coho out of the 108 they could have caught.
Weather was windy at 20 knots out of the northwest so boats were trying to avoid the wind and seek more protected fishing areas. Wind for the next three days looks lighter which will allow us more areas to fish.
Thanks for reading my report and check out the Facebook for more photos.
