Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 7th – 15th, 2017

Hall Thompson group last day of fishing. GAF halibut.

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the dates of the 7th to the 15th of August 2017. So since my last report we had fished 7 days straight so no time to write the report. As of the 10th of August the Alaska Dept. of fish and game put an emergency order that no King salmon may be retained so that ended all King salmon fishing or the ability to keep King salmon. It was a shame since there have been large numbers of King salmon in our area of nice chunky size and the trollers were shaking many large Kings as well as they never did get a second opener which was a big hit on their years income. Sounds political to me not management but too busy working to know all what is going on with the politics of it…pretty fishy though with all the whining by Canada and the lower 48 who haven’t held up their part of the treaty agreement from what I hear. Anyhow thanks to good returns from our Klawock hatchery Coho fishing has been very good and halibut, bottom fishing is good enough. They also shut down the rock fish retention on August 1st, so no rockfish including yellow eye till the 27th or some date like that for rockfish. Weather took a dive for us but fishing inside has been good so only a few who got sea sick when we were out near the entrance of the ocean and had the swell coming in made some queasy, but hey

At 45″ size maximum only 55″ can beat this!

nothing like more chum to get the fish to come in to the boat. Hoping the fish keep coming and we finish with a strong season. Best to all and thanks for reading the reports. Check out our Facebook page for more pictures.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 4th – 6th, 2017

Just how big is this King? Probably not as big here as it will be in Boise.

Trophy GAF halibut

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 4th – 6th, 2017 located on Prince of Wales island, Craig Alaska. We are now in our last month of our guide and lodge service and this past three days was exceptional with all boats landing limits of Kings, Coho and halibut. The fish are all of respectable size with our largest King salmon at 33 pounds, largest Coho 15 pounds, largest halibut 121 pounds! All lodge and charter boats in the Craig area are mostly landing limits of Coho and many are landing limits of King salmon as well. Soon to change on the King salmon as the Commercial troll fleet will have a King salmon opener in the next week, just not sure of the dates. Weather has been exceptional with one day reaching high 70’s, little wind on the ocean so our last day was very nice on the water. The last day was exceptional for King salmon after limiting on King salmon we landed a total of 18 Kings trying to get our limit of Coho’s which we eventually did. Check out our Facebook page for more pictures and look forward to seeing all those folks coming here in the next few weeks. Crossing our fingers, saying our prayers that the weather and fishing remain good! Thanks for reading my reports.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 31st – August 2nd, 2017

And more Kings

Pahor’s 21st year at Kingfisher Lodge.

Prince of Wales Sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska July 31 – August 2nd. This past week was even better than the previous 3 days fishing with more large Coho and King salmon showing up. Most boats should be limiting on Coho and King salmon if they target them. Halibut and bottom fishing remain the same and weather was outstanding sunny warm weather with no w

ind and flat calm seas!! ( I need to whisper that word). For those of you coming to the Craig area or with us cross your fingers and say your prayers that the remainder of the month continues with what we have had this past week. My son in law has been out trolling and says in one day he released 50 large Kings so I hope they keep coming in. I also want to mention and Thank Bob and Joan Pahor from Las Vegas as this is their 21st year at Kingfisher Lodge, thanks for all your loyal business, and  Thanks for reading my report and enjoy the pictures. Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 26th – 28th, 2017

Kings for everyone!

OGrady, OHare family’s

Craig Alaska sport fishing report for July 26th thru the 28th on the southwest side of Prince of Wales island. Salmon fishing remains strong as both Coho and King salmon have been being caught in good numbers in the Craig area. Limits for both species have been fairly easy to procure the past couple of weeks although sometimes the King salmon are a crap shoot, it seems the past few days there were more king salmon getting caught. August 1st will shut down the Yellow eye rockfish limits until I believe the 27th of the month so don’t plan on being able to keep a Yellow eye. Ling cod and halibut the same limits. ADF&G feels the fishery needs to be closed (although there have been large numbers of the Yellow fish where ever we go) they believe there is a reduction in numbers, we can only trust that their management is correct and erring on conservative measures is always best on such a long lived fish, but we also hope it isn’t just for allocation issues. Klawock river hatchery now operated by SSRAA and run by Jeff Lundberg are doing a great job and we attribute the strong Coho runs to this hatchery. Jeff says this run is looking like the 2013 run when there were lots of fish, we are hoping it continues, great job Jeff! Check out our Facebook for more pictures.

Craig Alaska sport fishing report for August 8th thru the 10th

Steve Wild group

Steve Wild group

Craig Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for the above dates. Last three days fishing was really good for Coho the first 2 days then drastically tapered off yesterday with a average catch rate of less than half limits of Coho (that is a guestimate of mine only). Our boats landed about 70 percent of our limit of Coho for the day but chatter on the radio was much less due to boats running trying to find fish.

If you found a few fish you needed to stick it out and grind what you could. Bottom fishing is still good but weather has been an issue due to wind and ocean conditions. Overall outlook is a bit bleak coming from the commercial boats not doing well off shore which is where our fish come from. We are all praying that will change in the next few days. Time will tell and as the saying goes “all is well that ends well”.
Thanks for reading my report, more photos on our Facebook page.

Kingfisher Lodge Alaska sportfishing report for August 4th thru the 6th.

The Hollis Seim group before departure.

My Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the above dates. Past 3 days we had 18 guests targeting Coho salmon and Halibut with 2 GAF halibut on the agenda.

Limits of Coho were readily available but not without a price to pay due to (as Ray Troll’s tee shirt says) “Humpies from Hell”! That was exactly what it was with some times using 20 dozen bait herring to land 36 coho due to the large number of Pinks or Humpies in the mix.

Guests had fun though landing lots of salmon and we threw in a few King salmon to spice up the deal along with two 110 plus pound GAF halibut. Many boats were struggling for limits of Coho, which shows there are spotty schools of fish moving through, but we were able to land on the fish and work through the Pinks to get what we needed these past 3 days. Weather was northwest 25 to 30 knots making the ocean lumped up and to those not used to the rougher water sea sickness was their lot.
Still knocking on wood hoping the fish to keep coming. Be back in 3 more days, thanks for reading my report.

Don Blackmond group slaying the fish!

Fishing report for Alaska Kingfisher Lodge in Craig for the past three days has been very good still as runs remain strong for both King salmon and Coho salmon. King salmon may appear to be in smaller numbers but that is due to the larger number of Coho, Pinks and Dog salmon showing up. More time is spent landing the 6 fish limit on the Coho and with Pink salmon also being landed it takes away from King salmon opportunity.

Past three days two groups on Captain Joel’s and Captain Nils boat got their limits of King salmon and the last day limited on Coho.

Weyerhaeuser family with another great catch!

Weyerhaeuser family with another great catch!

My boat was short 4 Kings out of the 18 available to my anglers so my guys ended up with 14 King salmon 88 Coho out of the 108 they could have caught.
Weather was windy at 20 knots out of the northwest so boats were trying to avoid the wind and seek more protected fishing areas. Wind for the next three days looks lighter which will allow us more areas to fish.
Thanks for reading my report and check out the Facebook for more photos.

Kingfisher Charters & Lodge fishing report for June 19th thru the 21st.

Dave and John Underwood with David's 72" GAF halibut.

Dave and John Underwood with David’s 72″ GAF halibut.

Kingfisher Charters & Lodge fishing report for June 19th thru the 21st in Craig Alaska. The past 3 days fishing was again very good although out of the 80 king salmon we could catch we landed 75 Kings and fed over 25 to the very large Stellar Sea lion who is prodigious fish thief! Regardless we did well and this very large group of outstanding individuals kept their poise despite the large carnivore raping their lines each day always keeping great respect for Gods great creatures. Since these folks had pre-arranged for GAF halibut we landed 2 monsters one at 73 inches and one 72 inches so check out our Facebook page for more pictures its too involved to add them to my Word Press blog, sorry. Overall fishing in the Craig area is very good as usual most if not all boats landing limits of salmon and halibut despite the tremendous loss of King salmon to the Sea Lions. Thanks for reading my posts!

This is the last Fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge Craig Alaska from the 29th to the 30th of August 2015. The weather came in from very nice sunny skies and light winds to heavy rain and gale force winds to finish the season out. We were allowed one day of partial sun and good King salmon fishing off the

outer coast of Noyes island at Pineapple rock where we landed 4 out of the 6 Kings hooked and Joel landed 5 out of the 6 Kings he hooked. The largest King landed

was 30 pounds by Harley Lisherness and he thought is was the largest of his fishing career. Silver fishing turned out very good despite the weather landing limits of Coho all three days as well as our halibut. We didn’t attempt snapper or ling cod fishing due to weather conditions.
Thanks again to all who checked out my reports this summer and looking foreword to seeing you all again next year. I’m off to the Alaska Range looking for Dall sheep and the quiet and solitude of the Mountains! Wishing you all the best until 2016!

Fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge Craig Alaska from the 25th to the 27th of August.

Rick Knudsen group family and friends with great looking fish.

Rick Knudsen group family and friends with great looking fish.

The fishing or catching the past three days was first of all sunny skies and beautiful ocean and again King salmon limits could be caught and we did pretty good landing almost all our daily limit of King salmon over the 3 day period but fell far short on our Silver salmon. Joel limited one day on the silvers but we were far short on 2 of the 3 days and so put our time in fishing for King salmon and bottom fish. We did land some nice fish though with some great Lings and Yellow eye.
