A fishing report at Kingfisher Lodge near Craig Alaska for the dates of August 17th thru the 19th. The past 3 days fishing for Coho salmon or Silver salmon was very good and weather cooperated as well with the wind dying down on the afternoon of the 17th and becoming very calm and sunny the last two days of the 3 day trip giving our anglers a great opportunity to harvest all their Coho limits as well as most of their halibut and ling cod limits. The Coho or Silver salmon seem to be in good numbers and the size is remarkable as we figured about a 10 pound average live weight with the largest yesterday weighing in at 14 pounds. We took the weight of filleted salmon and divided by the number of fish caught per day and came up with 4.7 pounds of fillets per fish which is a higher than normal per fish size. Some of the Coho were larger than some of the King salmon we caught in June and given the number of fish per limit it makes for a great winter supply of wild salmon to enjoy throughout the year making August a prime time for sport fishing for Alaska salmon and bottom fish. We hope to see you at our Alaskan family run lodge in the future if you haven’t been here before and thanks for reading my report. “Tight Lines” as they say.

The Seth Mitchner group with a great catch of fish.

Idaho boys with another successful day.

Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge located in Craig Alaska has been a sportfishing lodge since 1994 a family run operation specializing in ocean salmon and halibut fishing trips including bottom fish of different varieties. This report is for August 5-7. The past 3 days weather was as good as it gets with sunny skies and flat calm water. Coho or Silver salmon fishing which what is the focus this time of year has been spotty, meaning one day very good the next maybe not so good. It seems that within most guests 3 day trip they will get one really good day and the other days will be partial limits of Coho. King salmon have been good considering a non resident is only allowed one King salmon for his trip after August 1st but if given the time it is possible to fill that limit. Bottom fishing and Halibut fishing has been good but we are traveling more distance to accomplish that goal. The retention of Yellow eye and all n0n-pelagic rock fish are closed throughout August, although Pelagic rock fish are open which would be your black sea bass. I will let the pictures speak for how the past groups did these past 3 days. Thanks for reading my report.

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 20th thru the 22nd, 2018

The Stutz-Hutcherson families with a great catch of fish!

alaska trophy fishing

The Stutz-Hutcherson families with a great day of GAF fishing.

Craig Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for the above dates. Coho fishing increased dramatically the past three days with our boats landing limits of Coho each day and I believe most boats were getting limits of Coho, thanks to the Klawock Coho hatchery located on the Klawock river. This hatchery puts out 5 million Coho and our appreciation for this facility is beyond bounds as without it Craig’s Coho fishing would be a much reduced fishery, so we are very glad to have these fish suddenly show up (owned and operated by SSRAA). We now are hoping that the Coho’s continue to flood into the inside waters outside the Craig area. Thanks for reading the post.

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 2nd thru the 5th of July, 2018.

Carl Postma group with a great day of fishing!

Craig Alaska fishing report for the 2nd thru the 5th of July. First of all we had beautiful weather and ocean conditions the past 3 days and everyone had a great time enjoying the beauty S.E. has to offer. King and Silver salmon fishing has been extra tough the past 3 days although all 16 guests landed their limits of King salmon only 5 Silvers or Coho were caught. Bottom fishing for rockfish and Ling cod is very good though saving our bacon and keeping the guests happy landing limits of these fish they have sometimes overlooked in the past due to larger numbers of salmon around. The commercial troll opening was on July 1st and they have also been way down on their catches and surely will affect the sport fisherman to a degree. We are optimistic that more fish will begin to show up as traditionally is the case but as of yesterday it was a struggle. Halibut fishing for the 38″ and under has also been tough off Noyes island, there seems to be plenty of the big ones around but unless a person has purchased a GAF fish they must be released. Looking forward to more fish coming in, stay tuned for the next report, thanks for reading.

The John Wilson family with a great catch. Justin and Jaren both landed 100 plus pound halibut but had to let them go.

Prince of Wales sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska June 30th 2018

Fishing report for June 27th thru the 29th of June 2018. The past 3 days King salmon fishing was good enough landing 45 out of 48 King salmon for the 16 guests. King salmon have been in most traditional areas off Noyes, Baker and Sumez islands with Sumez island being the most productive. The largest King I have heard of was caught by Catch a King charters at 50 lbs..  Our largest King salmon was caught yesterday at 37 pounds with a 35 with it. Bottom fishing remains strong landing limits of Ling cod and Yellow eye as well as black sea bass. Weather has remained cool with some wind but ocean conditions have been very tolerable.

The Canadians with their big King salmon, Congrats Lloyd and Dave!

John Underwood group with a GAF 100 pound halibut!

Kingfisher Lodge fishing report for June 23rd thru the 25th

Andres group with a 63" 127 lb. GAF halibut

Andres group with a 63″ 127 lb. GAF halibut

Fishing report for Prince of Whales sport fishing at Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for June 23rd thru the 25th. We had 15 anglers up from 2 separate groups with the potential for 90 King salmon in a 3 day period, fishing has been outstanding landing 90 of the 90. Most all anglers from lodges and weekend warriors have been able to land their limits of King salmon in the Craig area. Our largest King for the past three days was in the high 20’s and have not heard of any wall hangers not saying there haven’t been any. We are landing some nice halibut and as our group had pre-purchased a GAF halibut we went after and landed a 63 inch fish weighing in at 127 pounds according to the book of weight to length chart, we also landed a variety of large halibut but chose to keep only the 63″ fish being the largest landed. Commercial season opens on the 1st of July so we can expect King salmon numbers to decline but also the limits for King salmon are reduced to 1 per day 6 in possession after the 1st. We hope that the silver salmon will be showing up in numbers here shortly, so far we have only landed a few for the lodge this year. Thanks again for reading the report and check out Facebook for more photos and video clips.

June 19th thru June 21st 2015 fishing report

Jeff Vandel group with a great catch of fish!

Jeff Vandel group with a great catch of fish!

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for June 19th thru June 21st 2015 at Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska. The past 3 days fishing for our group of 12 was pretty good overall  but it went as follows. The weather all three days was outstanding with flat calm seas and partly cloudy to clear skies as the days progressed. First day fishing both boats landed their limits and many boats in the Craig area doing the same by the sound of it on the radio. Day two was a different story and almost every boat struggled to get the King salmon my boat only landing 3 and Joels boat landing 6 for the day. Day 3 was much better with 21 Kings landed between 12 anglers and sounded like more fish were landed with the other charter boats as well.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge July 31th – August 1st, 2014

Strawns and Pahors with a great catch of fish.

Strawns and Pahors with a great catch of fish.

Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska August 1st 2014. The past 3 days we were blessed with wonderful people, sunny skies, and flat water mixed with outstanding fishing landing limits of King salmon and Silver salmon each day as well as nice halibut and bottom fish. Since we have been fishing alone for a week or so our information is sketchy at best but what I hear is most boats are getting limits of King salmon and most of their silver salmon if not all of the limits in the Craig area. It appears the the Colombia river fish are showing up in good numbers with our guests landing and releasing many Kings trying to get their limits of Silver salmon so many of our long returning guests rate this week for them as the best ever in the past 20 years which says quite a bit, this of course has to do with the abundance  of King salmon in the area rather than the Silver salmon since those numbers are down from 2013.

Ken, Bob, Lyle, Jim, Tom and Joel with their great catch of fish.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 7th, & 8th, 2014

Enjoying the time together around the fire despite the inclimate weather, truely hearty souls.

Enjoying the time together around the fire despite the inclimate weather, truely hearty souls.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge and the Craig area. Today my boat had a hard time finding our King salmon while Joel landed 5 King salmon we only landed 3 although we did land 16 Silvers and Joel 20, in all the 7th was a good day but not as good as we would have liked. The 8th turned out to be much better landing our limits of King salmon although we had to work at it all day and landing a few nice Halibut along while salmon fishing. Both boats landed a total of 20 silver salmon and 12 King salmon as well as bottom fish. Largest halibut of the day was 44″. Weather was pretty tough as winds blew from the south at 20 knots as forecasted with a heavy mist of rain pelting us in the face but we stuck it out as other boats left one by one with less than their limits and chatter on the radio sounded as though boats were struggling to get their fish. Silvers still have not shown up in numbers so we are anxious for that. Word from a local lodge that they were traveling north and limiting on silvers but the distance is beyond what we want to travel and expect the Silvers to continue to show up in better numbers as the days pass by. Check out more pictures on our facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/alaskakingfisherlodge or click on the Facebook icon on the blog page.
