And more Kings

Pahor’s 21st year at Kingfisher Lodge.

Prince of Wales Sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska July 31 – August 2nd. This past week was even better than the previous 3 days fishing with more large Coho and King salmon showing up. Most boats should be limiting on Coho and King salmon if they target them. Halibut and bottom fishing remain the same and weather was outstanding sunny warm weather with no w

ind and flat calm seas!! ( I need to whisper that word). For those of you coming to the Craig area or with us cross your fingers and say your prayers that the remainder of the month continues with what we have had this past week. My son in law has been out trolling and says in one day he released 50 large Kings so I hope they keep coming in. I also want to mention and Thank Bob and Joan Pahor from Las Vegas as this is their 21st year at Kingfisher Lodge, thanks for all your loyal business, and  Thanks for reading my report and enjoy the pictures. Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 26th – 28th, 2017

Kings for everyone!

OGrady, OHare family’s

Craig Alaska sport fishing report for July 26th thru the 28th on the southwest side of Prince of Wales island. Salmon fishing remains strong as both Coho and King salmon have been being caught in good numbers in the Craig area. Limits for both species have been fairly easy to procure the past couple of weeks although sometimes the King salmon are a crap shoot, it seems the past few days there were more king salmon getting caught. August 1st will shut down the Yellow eye rockfish limits until I believe the 27th of the month so don’t plan on being able to keep a Yellow eye. Ling cod and halibut the same limits. ADF&G feels the fishery needs to be closed (although there have been large numbers of the Yellow fish where ever we go) they believe there is a reduction in numbers, we can only trust that their management is correct and erring on conservative measures is always best on such a long lived fish, but we also hope it isn’t just for allocation issues. Klawock river hatchery now operated by SSRAA and run by Jeff Lundberg are doing a great job and we attribute the strong Coho runs to this hatchery. Jeff says this run is looking like the 2013 run when there were lots of fish, we are hoping it continues, great job Jeff! Check out our Facebook for more pictures.

Alaska sportfishing report for August 28th thru the 31st.

My fishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge in Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales island. With the season tapering off we only had one group of 6 people at the lodge and thus only running one boat. Coho fishing for the last three days was good with a few short the first and third day. However this was made up by the large size ranging from 12-16 lbs. that allowed everybody to go home with 2 fish boxes each.

Halibut fishing was very good, allowing us to get limits every day except for the first day where we ended being one short. However we had to release 4 oversized halibut with the biggest being 140 lbs. Russell Ruder was the lucky chosen one that had to tangle with the halibut for approximately 35 minutes before we were able to release it.

That was all for this season, now we are off to the Alaska Range to go for sheep and moose hunting. To sum it all up it was a great season and we wish all our guests the best until we see them again next year.

Alaska sport fishing report for the Craig area on Prince of Wales Island for the above dates. My report for our Alaska fishing lodge for the 3rd week of August is a positive fishing report. Last three days fishing has been as good as can be expected with limits of big Coho and great bottom fishing. We didn’t fish for King salmon but focused on our Coho’s which some made the 15 pound size with more of a 10 pound average.

Getting off shore Coho many of those fish are destined for Canadian rivers and so their large size is reflected by the size of the river they are bound for, but also many are from the Klawock river hatchery POWHA (now under SSRAA). Commercial boats are now seeing more big Coho showing up, but most commercial trollers are focused on King salmon as their quota is still being filled and Kings are bringing $100 each so they are trying to get their share of the valuable fish, the Coho being worth between $10.00 and $20.00 each.
We are optimistic to finish with a strong sport fishing season!

Kingfisher fishing report for July 21st thru July 23rd, 2015 in Craig Alaska. The past 3 days was probably at the top of the season for great trips for our groups as nice King and Coho salmon were moving in. It was apparent that most boats in the area were landing limits of King as well as silver salmon making everyone very happy. The weather forecast was for 30 knot winds on the 23rd but never did develop which really helped everyone have a great trip. Michael Drews landed the largest King salmon of the trip at 42 pounds so congrats to Mike on the big catch. He thought he was stuck on the bottom till the fish started to move, then it was “game on”. There have been some nice 50 pound plus fish being landed and I heard of a 70 plus also being landed by Waterfall resort, but not a confirmed weight on that. The silver salmon that we have been catching are of nice size so for those of you coming up it should continue to get better as the season progresses, also the trollers are telling me they are turning lots of King salmon loose as their season is over but appears many more Kings to migrate through our area. I will post more pictures of this group on the Facebook

May 31 thru June 3rd fishing report

Feld group with a great catch of fish!

Feld group with a great catch of fish!

May 31 thru June 3rd fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales island Craig Alaska. We had a total of 16 guests for our lodge this week which is a bunch for us but fishing and weather was cooperative with us as our folks came from all over the US. The 4 days of fishing with the liberal King salmon limits for the non resident in 2015 of 6 per season ( up from the normal 3) left us with 96 kings to catch in 4 days so as it turned out we landed 95 King salmon in the 4 days which was really an outstanding trip for us all and weather was fantastic as well.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge August 16th- August 18th, 2014

Tiffany, Will, Dee, Tony, Kendra, and Tom with a nice catch of Coho!

Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Charters and Lodge in Craig Alaska a family run fishing lodge where catching is our business. The past three days the Coho salmon have been coming in very good numbers near the outer coast with the fish averaging around 10 pounds live weight, the largest this last week at 12 pounds and the previous week we landed several at 16 pounds. It is amazing to see the size of these fish looking much like small King salmon,  everyone is exceptionally happy with what they have been catching. King salmon numbers  have tapered off with the commercial troll fleet having had 5 days of fishing and as the King salmon are moving on to their respective rivers to spawn. Landing limits of Coho by 8:30 am we then have been spending time looking for nice halibut, Ling cod, etc so not spending time looking for King salmon. The past 3 days all boats in the Craig charter fleet have been limiting on Coho in a reletively short time since the Coho numbers are up so well.  I will be getting tag reports from ADF&G for the Coho’s that we landed that were tagged and I expect the majority of these fish to be POWHA fish on the Klawock river. I take my hat off to the staff there raising these beauties as we enjoy their return to the Klawock river and how important this hatchery is to S.E. Alaska sport and commercial fishery.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska June 27th and 28th, 2014

Dale, Rod, Ron, Lloyd, Doug and Dave with a great catch today.

Dale, Rod, Ron, Lloyd, Doug and Dave with a great catch today.

Salmon fishing in Alaska these past few days has continued to be strong as Washington State fish continue to be caught here off the outer coast of Prince of Wales island. We are getting at least half a dozen tagged or fin clipped fish with reports from ADF&G coming back as Colombia river fish. Past two days the Kent Halvorsen group from Alberta Canada has been limiting on King salmon with the largest just under 30 pounds. The Stellar sea lions have been well fed by my boat as Joel seems to be invisible to the salmon eating monsters. We have lost 12 King salmon to them over the past two days and our frustration is at a peak. We blame Kent Halvorsen for his politically incorrect comments about the fish eating mammels and believe they are targeting us based on his statements. We are looking forward to the commercial fleet starting and am sure that the sea lions will get an education here in the next few days, something a charter boat would not dream of doing is educating sea lions. Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. August 18th

Laura holding Quinn's 45" Halibut!

Laura holding Quinn’s 45″ Halibut!

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  August 18th the forecast was for 20 knot winds and 9 foot seas so we decided both boats would avoid the outside waters and fish the protected waters on the inside. Silver salmon fishing has been consistently good due mostly to the Prince of Wales Hatchery located on the Klawock river which produces 5 million Coho smolt each year. 2013 has been a year that will be in the record books as off the charts for returning Coho’s in S.E. Alaska. Alaska Department of fish and game unofficially has credited 45% of the total returns of Coho in S.E. Alaskan waters to POWHA, or Prince of Wales Hatchery Association.  As we expected fishing was good and with two boats and 11 anglers we landed our limits of 66 silvers before 8 am in the morning which was good but not unexpected for reasons stated above. From our Salmon fishing we moved on to Halibut fishing and again staying on the inside waters and both boats found good Halibut fishing and landed our limits without much problems and due to stormy, rainy weather decided to make it an early day.
