Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 17th – 19th, 2017

A close knit group!

Dave with a big halibut and rare sun.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report for the days of August 17th through the 19th. Prince of Wales sport fishing off Craig has remained stable and the past 3 days weather was a bit tough with wind and rain but the beauty of Craig area is being able to fish inside spots and not have to fish the open ocean. We were able to get most if not all our limits last few day for our three boats. Day 2 we were short a few silvers on each boat other days limits were had. Weather will be an issue for the next few days as well and all the folks out need to put on their tough side and weather the weather, although the 22nd looks pretty good on the forecast. If the fish are biting so be it this is S.E. Alaska a rainforest and that’s why we have fish because we have water. Not much else to say but season is winding down with 6 more fishing days ahead, should be good.

Nicer part of the ocean.

Check out the Facebook page for a few photos of last 3 days.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 15th – 20th, 2017

A great day fishin

Another great day at sea!

Awesome catch

Great family fishing vacation

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 15th thru July 20th,2017. Sorry last turnover day we had to replace two motors on the Trinity plus a host of other duties and catch up left me without time to do the report. Since my last report the Coho and Halibut fishing has kicked off to very good landing limits quite easily and many boats commenting on the radio chatter that they cant find the Kings due to too many Coho!! Tough day, or great problem to have. The last group had GAF fish to land so we spent a large part our days fishing for big halibut and we were not disappointed landing many large halibut as the photos will attest. I will let the photos speak for themselves and look forward to the upcoming fishermen and thanks for reading my report.

Great variety

My fishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge in Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales island. The past three days fishing was again exceptional as we were able to get most of our limits of Coho salmon all three days bringing in some respectable fish.

The last GAF halibut was caught by the Rick Knudsen group finishing up with a 110 pounder, or 60″ fish. Today is sunny and we are expecting favorable winds for the next three days which will finish up our season at our Alaska fishing lodge here in Craig Alaska! Thanks all of you for watching or reading my report this season again. I will post one more in 4 days and then off to the Alaska Range for my hunting season.

My fishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge in Craig Alaska on the outer coast of Prince of Wales Island. The past 4 days we had 16 anglers on our 3 boats focused mostly on Silver or Coho salmon.

Coho’s seemed in good numbers with limits fairly easy to land with the fish a good average size of around 8 pounds which is good for this time of year. Pink salmon are in fairly abundant numbers as you find out trying to get the Coho getting into large schools of the Pinks at times landing up to 6 Pinks to one Coho, other times a much better ratio. Overall we landed limits of Coho the first 3 days and the last and 4th day we put our time into King salmon and Halibut, looking for a 43 inch size to the Halibut as our goal. We invested an average of 3 hours a day for 6 halibut which was time well spent.
Captain Nils boat landed limits of King salmon on the last day and as well as Kings other days with the largest at 35 pounds. We landed a small handful of Kings as well as Joel his best day limiting on Kings.

Overall the fishing is pretty good in the Craig area with most boats limiting on the species they focus on weather it is King salmon or Coho.  It appears that Coho numbers are consistent, still knocking on wood that fish numbers remain strong throughout the summer.

Thanks for reading my report. I will post more pictures on our Facebook page if you would like to see more.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales island, Craig Alaska for the above dates. The past three days weather was blown up with winds 20 to 25 knots out of the south with some rain. Ocean swells reached 11 foot so we stayed inside all three days landing limits of Coho salmon, some King salmon and Halibut.

My boat landed 3 Kings for the 3 days. We boated 2 GAF halibut one on Joel’s boat and one on my boat. Most boats in the Craig area landed limits of silvers some landing limits of King salmon. Rough water kept many boats from fishing the outside waters but my guess is most guests left happy with their catches fishing in lodges in the Craig area. We are optimistic that more fish are moving in as many points of land fish seem to be showing up, that is the Coho salmon.
Thanks for reading my fishing report and I will post more photos on our Facebook page. I will be back in 4 days!

Fishing report for July 10th thru the 12th.

Sandor Hites family with a nice catch of fish!

Fishing report for July 10th thru the 12th for the Alaska fishing lodge Kingfisher in Craig Alaska. The past three days we had three separate groups in. All three days each group landed limits of kings except one boat was minus one King salmon for the 3 days fishing so King salmon are obviously still in good numbers. Coho was slow the 1st 2 days but picked up considerably up and down the outer coast of the Craig area with most charter boats doing very well if not limiting on the silvers. Our best day was 27 Coho for 6 anglers on my boat but we also ran out of bait as we were assaulted by large schools of pink salmon having six at a time on of the pesky fish.

Wiper and Dahlgren family with another great catch!

Wiper and Dahlgren family with another great catch!

Halibut have also moved in in certain areas in good numbers and have had to release many over 43 inches. The Fish and Game reported they had some issues with some oversize halibut that were retained by some charter vessels, so if your guide releases one that looks really good just remember he is doing his job and obeying the law that is in place.

Nothing exciting to add only looking good and this summer is looking like the fish numbers are consistently strong and building…..so we knock on wood and hope it continues throughout the summer. Check out the Facebook page clicking on the upper right hand Facebook emblem. Thanks for reading my report!

Alaska fishing report for July 6th thru the 8th.

Pat Dylan group with GAF halibut.

Pat Dylan group with GAF halibut.

Alaska fishing report for July 6th thru the 8th, Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska, an Alaska sport fishing lodge. The past 3 days fishing was very good for us landing some really nice King salmon and halibut. This group had pre-purchased 4 GAF halibut which gave us the option to keep 4 halibut any size in addition to the regular 1 halibut daily limit but with the size restriction of 43 inches. GAF or Guided Angler Fish is when the lodge sets up a lease from a commercial permit holder of halibut and then the angler who wants a halibut of any size will pay the fee for that fish which reimburses the cost of the lease, roughly about $400/fish. The Pat Dylan group had set this up this spring and had pre-purchased the 4 fish,  so we spent an afternoon looking for big ones landing and keeping 4, but also releasing at least 7 other very large halibut as we looked for our daily limit halibut. There was also some very nice ling cod and yellow eye landed over the course of the 3 days.

Big king day!

Big king day!

King salmon fishing was very good for us as well limiting each day with our second day a larger strain of fish moved in so we landed two at 46 and 47 pounds as well as 3 or 4 in the 30 pound range, the next day those fish seemed to have moved on although Joel’s boat landed a couple in the 30’s on the last day.
Coho fishing remains spotty and low numbers for now but we expect that to change at any day as the fish move in, our best day was about 16 Coho for 12 anglers. Reports are there are schools of fish off shore so our optimism remains high that we will have a consistent Coho fishery this season. I have posted more pictures and video on our Facebook page so please click on the Facebook emblem on the upper right corner to check them out. Thanks again for reading my reports!

Kingfisher Charters & Lodge fishing report for June 19th thru the 21st.

Dave and John Underwood with David's 72" GAF halibut.

Dave and John Underwood with David’s 72″ GAF halibut.

Kingfisher Charters & Lodge fishing report for June 19th thru the 21st in Craig Alaska. The past 3 days fishing was again very good although out of the 80 king salmon we could catch we landed 75 Kings and fed over 25 to the very large Stellar Sea lion who is prodigious fish thief! Regardless we did well and this very large group of outstanding individuals kept their poise despite the large carnivore raping their lines each day always keeping great respect for Gods great creatures. Since these folks had pre-arranged for GAF halibut we landed 2 monsters one at 73 inches and one 72 inches so check out our Facebook page for more pictures its too involved to add them to my Word Press blog, sorry. Overall fishing in the Craig area is very good as usual most if not all boats landing limits of salmon and halibut despite the tremendous loss of King salmon to the Sea Lions. Thanks for reading my posts!

Fishing report for July 18th thru July 20th, 2015.

The Stutz and Hutcherson families with a wonderful day fishing.

The Stutz and Hutcherson families with a wonderful day fishing posing with a boat limit of fish.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report for July 18th thru July 20th, 2015. The past three days fishing with two families of 11 members brought lots of fun and laughs with our youngest at 7 years old although not the youngest in our fishing history. It wasn’t all about catching fish with these groups as the kids loved catching fish but they mostly enjoyed getting back to the lodge and swinging on the tree swing over the water, swimming and running in the woods. Catching fish was very productive though except the first day when all the kids had anti sea sick medicine and they had a really hard time keeping their eyes open to fish but after that got straightened out catching picked up. So for King salmon their seems to be plenty of them around if you have a bit of luck and are persistent can catch both limits of Kings as well as silvers. The Coho or Silvers are in good numbers landing limits again if patient and persistent. Halibut fishing remains good. David Stutz loves to look for big fish (been on Wicked Tuna twice for big Tuna, Australia for Black Marlin and Kingfisher Lodge for big halibut) Dave wanted the 80″ or bigger butt and so we went a looking landing the largest at 150 pounds landed by Debra Jordan, and many in the 100 pound and under but finding not close to the 80 inch mark. A King salmon derby contender was landed yesterday by Wayne Baxter from Klawock at 64 pounds (fishing with Rich Manning who owns Catch a King lodge). Wayne is a huge contributor and organizer for Craig-Klawock King salmon derby so I really hope Wayne wins, Good job Wayne and Rich!

The past three days was a hoot and look forward for another year with these folks. Check out the Facebook page for more pictures and thanks for checking in with us.

June 14th thru June17th 2015 fishing report

Kevin Jones group with a outstanding catch of King salmon and bottom fish!

Kevin Jones group with a outstanding catch of King salmon and bottom fish!

Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales island June 14th thru the 17. This week we had very good weather for fishing as winds were light for the most part and seas were only 3 feet or so which made fishing the outer coast a pleasant experience and the ability to fish many other spots that in rough weather are out of the question. Overall we did very well considering the fishing or numbers of fish are down from last year but one has to remember that the limit now being 2 King salmon per day puts the stakes much higher for the guides as with a normal limit of one per day would make the year a average or better than average year for King salmon numbers. For the 3 days fishing Joel’s boat landed its limit of 36 King salmon where my boat fell short by 12 Kings we landing only 24 Kings. Not to say we didn’t have our opportunities. I am not sure of how the other charter boats were doing but what I gathered on the radio chatter it has been tougher for most captains to limit on King salmon. Halibut fishing has been pretty good and it seems that larger fish are starting to show up as the season progresses. Here are a few pictures of the last three days fishing and I will post more pictures on our Facebook page as well.
