Craig Alaska fishing report for July 20th thru the 22nd, 2018

The Stutz-Hutcherson families with a great catch of fish!

alaska trophy fishing

The Stutz-Hutcherson families with a great day of GAF fishing.

Craig Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for the above dates. Coho fishing increased dramatically the past three days with our boats landing limits of Coho each day and I believe most boats were getting limits of Coho, thanks to the Klawock Coho hatchery located on the Klawock river. This hatchery puts out 5 million Coho and our appreciation for this facility is beyond bounds as without it Craig’s Coho fishing would be a much reduced fishery, so we are very glad to have these fish suddenly show up (owned and operated by SSRAA). We now are hoping that the Coho’s continue to flood into the inside waters outside the Craig area. Thanks for reading the post.

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 15th thru the 17th, 2018

Great times with a great family.

Craig Alaska sportfishing report for the 15th thru the 17th of July at Kingfisher Lodge. The past three days were fair enough for Coho or Silvers considering the dismal reports up and down the coast especially in Sitka. the past 3 days our 18 anglers landed 130 Coho out of the 320 they could catch in 3 days so not great but not terrible either, as I said considering what is going on up and down the coast. Each day that passes we are expecting more fish to move in and wouldn’t be out of reason to have limits showing up any day now so we are keeping our fingers crossed and saying our prayers this happens. Bottom fishing was good for the past groups and the Blackmond group landed 2 GAF halibut to add to their catch. King salmon fishing is very slow and for that reason most boats are focused on Coho. (I will post more pictures but my phone went dead so I am waiting to receive pictures from guests)

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 7th thru the 13th, 2018

Dowdle group with a GAF day fishing!

Craig Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for the week of July 7th thru the 13th. I missed the first group report and now combining the two groups reports for the above dates. King salmon fishing remained slow but we were able to limit on the one King salmon per guest last two groups. By the second group arriving on the 10th we had one slower day and finished strong landing all King salmon limits and the best two days were 15 Coho and 13 Coho for one boat. Each day is a new day and one day we will see limits of Coho or Silver salmon. Some of the commercial trollers are landing up to 100 per day off shore so they are on their way. Bottom fishing remains strong and good halibut fishing depending on water conditions and where we are as far as getting to the halibut spots. The boats are out today so will give a report in 3 days coming. The top picture is the Steve Delamore group with a great catch of fish. Thanks for reading my reports.

The Wes Goldstein goup with a great catch of fish!

Wiper/Dahlgren group with a nice catch!

The Jerry Karlin “Cornhusker” group with a great catch!

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 2nd thru the 5th of July, 2018.

Carl Postma group with a great day of fishing!

Craig Alaska fishing report for the 2nd thru the 5th of July. First of all we had beautiful weather and ocean conditions the past 3 days and everyone had a great time enjoying the beauty S.E. has to offer. King and Silver salmon fishing has been extra tough the past 3 days although all 16 guests landed their limits of King salmon only 5 Silvers or Coho were caught. Bottom fishing for rockfish and Ling cod is very good though saving our bacon and keeping the guests happy landing limits of these fish they have sometimes overlooked in the past due to larger numbers of salmon around. The commercial troll opening was on July 1st and they have also been way down on their catches and surely will affect the sport fisherman to a degree. We are optimistic that more fish will begin to show up as traditionally is the case but as of yesterday it was a struggle. Halibut fishing for the 38″ and under has also been tough off Noyes island, there seems to be plenty of the big ones around but unless a person has purchased a GAF fish they must be released. Looking forward to more fish coming in, stay tuned for the next report, thanks for reading.

The John Wilson family with a great catch. Justin and Jaren both landed 100 plus pound halibut but had to let them go.

The Giraud family with a great catch of fish!

Prince of Wales sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska June 30th 2018

Fishing report for June 27th thru the 29th of June 2018. The past 3 days King salmon fishing was good enough landing 45 out of 48 King salmon for the 16 guests. King salmon have been in most traditional areas off Noyes, Baker and Sumez islands with Sumez island being the most productive. The largest King I have heard of was caught by Catch a King charters at 50 lbs..  Our largest King salmon was caught yesterday at 37 pounds with a 35 with it. Bottom fishing remains strong landing limits of Ling cod and Yellow eye as well as black sea bass. Weather has remained cool with some wind but ocean conditions have been very tolerable.

The Canadians with their big King salmon, Congrats Lloyd and Dave!

John Underwood group with a GAF 100 pound halibut!

Glen Williams group with a great catch of fish!

Kingfisher Lodge fishing report for June 16th – 18th

Craig Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for June 16th thru the 18th. Although fishing has been spotty here in the Craig area the past three days fishing was ok.  Having 3 boats not all boats limited on Kings every day depending on where you decided to go fishing. Noyes Island has been a on off again area so if you decide to go on the wrong day it may not go well for you. It has been tougher on these three days but overall fishing was ok, I will add that there are an abundance of shaker or under 28″ Kings which are fun to land but don’t end up in the cooler.

We landed 3 GAF halibut so that helped quite a bit with the catch poundage along with sea bass, ling cod and yellow eye. Right now as I am writing this the boats are out and last two days including today the boats limited on Kings by 8:30 a.m.

Harry Saal group with a nice rack of fish.

Marsden Blanch family with lots of fish.

Jeff Vandel group with their great catch of fish.

so maybe it is looking up. Unfortunately the King salmon limits will be set back to one come July 1st so a non resident will only be able to retain one King salmon for the trip up. We are hoping the Silver salmon show up very soon!!

Fishing report for June 1 thru June 16th 2018

Joel landing Barbs 73″ GAF fish.

Fishing report for June 1 thru June 16th 2018. I am finally getting around to doing my fishing blog or report so will just give an overall for the past few weeks. We started full time as of June 3rd with most of the first two weeks chilly and windy for the most part. King salmon fishing has been spotty doing well some days and less well others. I believe each group up was able to get their King salmon limits or 3 for the season. This past week we have seen warmer weather and less wind and no rain and sometimes limiting in an hour or so. The largest King has been about 25 pounds with an average about 17 pounds. We have been doing a mix of trolling and mooching depending on weather, the group and how scattered the King salmon are. Most all the lodges are in full swing now and I believe most are getting limits but lots of boats competing for the fish.
Halibut fishing has been a challenge getting limit size halibut (38 inches) but getting halibut has been ok so far. Joel had 3 GAF fish this past group and got his fish without any problem the largest landed by Barb McIntyre at 73 inches. Ling cod and Yellow eye are prolific in the Craig area despite the Fish and Game closing Yellow eye on August 1st. We caught a 48″ Ling cod that had just eaten a shark and the tail was sticking out of his mouth with the rest of it down its throat! We had to let it go since not only did we have our limit but it was oversized as the keepers are from 30 to 45″ in southern S.E.

The McVeigh’s with a couple nice GAF fish.

The Matesi family with a nice catch.

Alaska.

Today our boats landed limits of kings early and are now out bottom fishing. Thanks for reading my report and will try to keep up to date from here on out.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 17th – 19th, 2017

A close knit group!

Dave with a big halibut and rare sun.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report for the days of August 17th through the 19th. Prince of Wales sport fishing off Craig has remained stable and the past 3 days weather was a bit tough with wind and rain but the beauty of Craig area is being able to fish inside spots and not have to fish the open ocean. We were able to get most if not all our limits last few day for our three boats. Day 2 we were short a few silvers on each boat other days limits were had. Weather will be an issue for the next few days as well and all the folks out need to put on their tough side and weather the weather, although the 22nd looks pretty good on the forecast. If the fish are biting so be it this is S.E. Alaska a rainforest and that’s why we have fish because we have water. Not much else to say but season is winding down with 6 more fishing days ahead, should be good.

Nicer part of the ocean.

Check out the Facebook page for a few photos of last 3 days.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 7th – 15th, 2017

Hall Thompson group last day of fishing. GAF halibut.

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the dates of the 7th to the 15th of August 2017. So since my last report we had fished 7 days straight so no time to write the report. As of the 10th of August the Alaska Dept. of fish and game put an emergency order that no King salmon may be retained so that ended all King salmon fishing or the ability to keep King salmon. It was a shame since there have been large numbers of King salmon in our area of nice chunky size and the trollers were shaking many large Kings as well as they never did get a second opener which was a big hit on their years income. Sounds political to me not management but too busy working to know all what is going on with the politics of it…pretty fishy though with all the whining by Canada and the lower 48 who haven’t held up their part of the treaty agreement from what I hear. Anyhow thanks to good returns from our Klawock hatchery Coho fishing has been very good and halibut, bottom fishing is good enough. They also shut down the rock fish retention on August 1st, so no rockfish including yellow eye till the 27th or some date like that for rockfish. Weather took a dive for us but fishing inside has been good so only a few who got sea sick when we were out near the entrance of the ocean and had the swell coming in made some queasy, but hey

At 45″ size maximum only 55″ can beat this!

nothing like more chum to get the fish to come in to the boat. Hoping the fish keep coming and we finish with a strong season. Best to all and thanks for reading the reports. Check out our Facebook page for more pictures.

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 4th – 6th, 2017

Just how big is this King? Probably not as big here as it will be in Boise.

Trophy GAF halibut

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 4th – 6th, 2017 located on Prince of Wales island, Craig Alaska. We are now in our last month of our guide and lodge service and this past three days was exceptional with all boats landing limits of Kings, Coho and halibut. The fish are all of respectable size with our largest King salmon at 33 pounds, largest Coho 15 pounds, largest halibut 121 pounds! All lodge and charter boats in the Craig area are mostly landing limits of Coho and many are landing limits of King salmon as well. Soon to change on the King salmon as the Commercial troll fleet will have a King salmon opener in the next week, just not sure of the dates. Weather has been exceptional with one day reaching high 70’s, little wind on the ocean so our last day was very nice on the water. The last day was exceptional for King salmon after limiting on King salmon we landed a total of 18 Kings trying to get our limit of Coho’s which we eventually did. Check out our Facebook page for more pictures and look forward to seeing all those folks coming here in the next few weeks. Crossing our fingers, saying our prayers that the weather and fishing remain good! Thanks for reading my reports.
