Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 22nd – 24th, 2017

Don’t find these in Nebraska!

Alaska sport fishing report for July 22nd thru the 24th for the Craig area on Prince of Wales island. Weather was our friend the past 3 days with ideal ocean conditions and salmon fishing as good as it can get for Coho salmon. King salmon are still being caught and our boats landing part if not all limits each day, and same for most boats fishing in the Craig area. Coho limits seem to be quite easy to fill with hardly any Pink salmon being caught…(I say that with trepidation). I like to have some pinks around as they make great halibut bait but past 3 days I never even had one on. The commercial seiners have not been fishing much off Noyes island so that might be the reason but we don’t miss the seiners since they scoop up lots of Coho when they are stretching out their nets, and when they do we see a drop in numbers. Commercial trollers are saying it is slow Coho fishing off shore so not sure what that means if we will see a drop off in our sport numbers or not but for now it has been steady and good. Halibut fishing has been good but putting in many hours trying to find a quality size fish say 38″ to 44″. We have been spending up to an hour a fish at times and been fishing a large area scouting but not finding any consistency anywhere. There seem to be a large number of oversize halibut 46″ up to 65″ and have landed and released some in the 70″ plus size. The largest landed for a GAF halibut has been 72″ if my memory is correct.
That is what I have to report for now, thanks for reading my report and all those who come fishing at Kingfisher lodge in Craig, we appreciate your business, we love catching fish!! Check out more pictures on our Facebook page.

Alaska sportfishing report for August 28th thru the 31st.

My fishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge in Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales island. With the season tapering off we only had one group of 6 people at the lodge and thus only running one boat. Coho fishing for the last three days was good with a few short the first and third day. However this was made up by the large size ranging from 12-16 lbs. that allowed everybody to go home with 2 fish boxes each.

Halibut fishing was very good, allowing us to get limits every day except for the first day where we ended being one short. However we had to release 4 oversized halibut with the biggest being 140 lbs. Russell Ruder was the lucky chosen one that had to tangle with the halibut for approximately 35 minutes before we were able to release it.

That was all for this season, now we are off to the Alaska Range to go for sheep and moose hunting. To sum it all up it was a great season and we wish all our guests the best until we see them again next year.

The last GAF halibut was caught by the Rick Knudsen group finishing up with a 110 pounder, or 60″ fish. Today is sunny and we are expecting favorable winds for the next three days which will finish up our season at our Alaska fishing lodge here in Craig Alaska! Thanks all of you for watching or reading my report this season again. I will post one more in 4 days and then off to the Alaska Range for my hunting season.

A sportfishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge on Prince of Wales island in Craig Alaska for the above dates. The past three days we had 14 anglers, weather and fishing was very good. Wind died down and ocean conditions were very good and catch rates were great landing limits of Coho and Halibut all three days as well as limits of Ling cod. Coho were of a very large average of at least 10 pounds the largest being 17 pounds.

Boats or lodges that kept to the inside waters struggled for limits, offshore was the place to be this past 3 days.

Alaska fishing lodge report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig for July 31st thru August 3rd. Coho and King salmon runs remain strong throughout the Craig area the past 3 days.

We focused on Coho limits and did not attempt to catch our King salmon although from reports those boats that focused on King salmon were able to get limits or if not close to limits of King salmon. Bottom fishing remains strong as well although finding the perfect 43″ halibut is not so easy unless being lucky or time is spent. to consistently catch up towards the 43″ limit requires a commitment of at least a few hours depending on how many people on your boat. Large or oversized halibut seem to be very prolific this year as we have had to release many oversized fish from over 43″ to well over 72″.
We are looking forward to seeing you who are yet to come and hope the fish runs remain strong throughout the summer. Thanks for reading my report.

My fishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge in Craig Alaska on the outer coast of Prince of Wales Island. The past 4 days we had 16 anglers on our 3 boats focused mostly on Silver or Coho salmon.

Coho’s seemed in good numbers with limits fairly easy to land with the fish a good average size of around 8 pounds which is good for this time of year. Pink salmon are in fairly abundant numbers as you find out trying to get the Coho getting into large schools of the Pinks at times landing up to 6 Pinks to one Coho, other times a much better ratio. Overall we landed limits of Coho the first 3 days and the last and 4th day we put our time into King salmon and Halibut, looking for a 43 inch size to the Halibut as our goal. We invested an average of 3 hours a day for 6 halibut which was time well spent.
Captain Nils boat landed limits of King salmon on the last day and as well as Kings other days with the largest at 35 pounds. We landed a small handful of Kings as well as Joel his best day limiting on Kings.

Overall the fishing is pretty good in the Craig area with most boats limiting on the species they focus on weather it is King salmon or Coho.  It appears that Coho numbers are consistent, still knocking on wood that fish numbers remain strong throughout the summer.

Thanks for reading my report. I will post more pictures on our Facebook page if you would like to see more.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales island, Craig Alaska for the above dates. The past three days weather was blown up with winds 20 to 25 knots out of the south with some rain. Ocean swells reached 11 foot so we stayed inside all three days landing limits of Coho salmon, some King salmon and Halibut.

My boat landed 3 Kings for the 3 days. We boated 2 GAF halibut one on Joel’s boat and one on my boat. Most boats in the Craig area landed limits of silvers some landing limits of King salmon. Rough water kept many boats from fishing the outside waters but my guess is most guests left happy with their catches fishing in lodges in the Craig area. We are optimistic that more fish are moving in as many points of land fish seem to be showing up, that is the Coho salmon.
Thanks for reading my fishing report and I will post more photos on our Facebook page. I will be back in 4 days!

Alaska fishing lodge fishing report for July 14th thru the 16th.

Don Blackmond group slaying the fish!

Fishing report for Alaska Kingfisher Lodge in Craig for the past three days has been very good still as runs remain strong for both King salmon and Coho salmon. King salmon may appear to be in smaller numbers but that is due to the larger number of Coho, Pinks and Dog salmon showing up. More time is spent landing the 6 fish limit on the Coho and with Pink salmon also being landed it takes away from King salmon opportunity.

Past three days two groups on Captain Joel’s and Captain Nils boat got their limits of King salmon and the last day limited on Coho.

My boat was short 4 Kings out of the 18 available to my anglers so my guys ended up with 14 King salmon 88 Coho out of the 108 they could have caught.
Weather was windy at 20 knots out of the northwest so boats were trying to avoid the wind and seek more protected fishing areas. Wind for the next three days looks lighter which will allow us more areas to fish.
Thanks for reading my report and check out the Facebook for more photos.

Alaska fishing report for July 6th thru the 8th.

Pat Dylan group with GAF halibut.

Pat Dylan group with GAF halibut.

Alaska fishing report for July 6th thru the 8th, Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska, an Alaska sport fishing lodge. The past 3 days fishing was very good for us landing some really nice King salmon and halibut. This group had pre-purchased 4 GAF halibut which gave us the option to keep 4 halibut any size in addition to the regular 1 halibut daily limit but with the size restriction of 43 inches. GAF or Guided Angler Fish is when the lodge sets up a lease from a commercial permit holder of halibut and then the angler who wants a halibut of any size will pay the fee for that fish which reimburses the cost of the lease, roughly about $400/fish. The Pat Dylan group had set this up this spring and had pre-purchased the 4 fish,  so we spent an afternoon looking for big ones landing and keeping 4, but also releasing at least 7 other very large halibut as we looked for our daily limit halibut. There was also some very nice ling cod and yellow eye landed over the course of the 3 days.

Big king day!

Big king day!

King salmon fishing was very good for us as well limiting each day with our second day a larger strain of fish moved in so we landed two at 46 and 47 pounds as well as 3 or 4 in the 30 pound range, the next day those fish seemed to have moved on although Joel’s boat landed a couple in the 30’s on the last day.
Coho fishing remains spotty and low numbers for now but we expect that to change at any day as the fish move in, our best day was about 16 Coho for 12 anglers. Reports are there are schools of fish off shore so our optimism remains high that we will have a consistent Coho fishery this season. I have posted more pictures and video on our Facebook page so please click on the Facebook emblem on the upper right corner to check them out. Thanks again for reading my reports!

July 2nd through the July 4th 2016

Thompson family with a great catch of fish!

Thompson family with a great catch of fish!

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska. The past 3 days we saw a reduction of fish due to the commercial troll opener as expected. King salmon limits were reduced to 1 per day for a non resident so this took the pressure off guides to produce larger limits with less fish due to the commercial opener. Weather on the 2nd was still stirred up with the ocean jacked up a bit. My crew decided to open the morning with a few shots of “Fireball” which not realizing when they started we were in calm water but rather quickly we moved out to lumpy ocean conditions where 3 had to re-taste the “Fireball” for a second time due to upset stomachs! Next few days the “Fireball” was left untouched, and catching fish improved. Well enough of that yes limits were had by our boats which our largest for 3 days was 22 lbs. but Captain Nils boat landed a nice 45 lb. fish and a 37 lb. fish caught by Kevin Thompson and his cousin Savanah Mott respectively. Coho’s seem to be showing up in trickling numbers so we are hoping to see more consistent numbers soon. Check out our Facebook page on the upper right corner of the report page and see more pictures of the past 3 days and other trips this summer.
Thanks for reading my reports!
