Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Charters and Lodge in Craig Alaska a family run fishing lodge where catching is our business. The past three days the Coho salmon have been coming in very good numbers near the outer coast with the fish averaging around 10 pounds live weight, the largest this last week at 12 pounds and the previous week we landed several at 16 pounds. It is amazing to see the size of these fish looking much like small King salmon,  everyone is exceptionally happy with what they have been catching. King salmon numbers  have tapered off with the commercial troll fleet having had 5 days of fishing and as the King salmon are moving on to their respective rivers to spawn. Landing limits of Coho by 8:30 am we then have been spending time looking for nice halibut, Ling cod, etc so not spending time looking for King salmon. The past 3 days all boats in the Craig charter fleet have been limiting on Coho in a reletively short time since the Coho numbers are up so well.  I will be getting tag reports from ADF&G for the Coho’s that we landed that were tagged and I expect the majority of these fish to be POWHA fish on the Klawock river. I take my hat off to the staff there raising these beauties as we enjoy their return to the Klawock river and how important this hatchery is to S.E. Alaska sport and commercial fishery.

The Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska for the above 4 days was great weather and fishing. As our last groups were leaving after weathering 3 days of wind and rain the new group of 15 arrived with the skies clearing, wind subsiding and as they flew in early in the moring we headed out for a half day of fishing. The guys were wound up like 9 day clocks ready to catch fish. We headed in for some inside spots and immediately started landing Coho’s and in 3 hours or so landed most if not all our limits of Coho for the day and headed back to the lodge. The next 3 days fishing was much the same as the guys were always on the dock by 4:45 am ready to go catch fish with the youngest in his 20’s and the oldest in the mid 80’s we had a great spread of age groups all just as ready to land fish. The group had money on the biggest Ling cod and biggest Halibut each day so we landed many nice fish with the largest Halibut at 71″ by Bob Kokalas and the largest Ling cod by Steve Hall at the limit of 45″, although there were many 100 plus halibut caught on the trip by many of the guys. Silver salmon fishing was very good every day and limits were had by most boats in the Craig area as the fish seem to be moving in and out in steady numbers. Check out the Facebook page link to the right for more pictures.

John and Bud enjoying 30 Knot winds and heavy rain catching their limits of Silvers despite the weather.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge August 8th- August 10th, 2014 brought rain and windy weather for two of the three days, but fishing or catching of Coho’s was good despite the windy conditions. Halibut was tougher due to weather and inability to go to areas we would normally fish so we did not limit on our halibut the last two of the three days. Comments from some of the guests was that “the weather added to the experience”. Those are words from die hard outdoorsmen and the type we like to have at our lodge and when the good weather is here it is much appreciated!!

Sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska August 4th-6th was close to exceptional for King salmon and Silver salmon including the weather. Coho or Silver salmon had moved in off Baker island and after 8 days of having it literally to ourselves word got out that there was fish there and by the 6th there were most all the boats in the Craig area fishing in Veta bay. It was quite impressive to see the armada of boats coming out to join us in the morning as around 50 boats were in line heading to catch the hungry salmon. The 4th and 5th the fish were biting early on and most boats had their limits fairly early on the Silver salmon but on the 6th it was slow and many boats fished for a few hours only landing a handful of salmon, but near the tide change the fish started moving in and feeding well and in no time we had our limits of Coho salmon. We ended the last day with only 3 King salmon but were happy with what we caught as many of the Silvers were as big as small Kings with one weighing in at 16 pounds that Ray Stevenson caught. Over all the past 3 days was exceptional fishing. Check out the rest of the photo’s on our Facebook page in the link to the right.

Strawns and Pahors with a great catch of fish.

Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska August 1st 2014. The past 3 days we were blessed with wonderful people, sunny skies, and flat water mixed with outstanding fishing landing limits of King salmon and Silver salmon each day as well as nice halibut and bottom fish. Since we have been fishing alone for a week or so our information is sketchy at best but what I hear is most boats are getting limits of King salmon and most of their silver salmon if not all of the limits in the Craig area. It appears the the Colombia river fish are showing up in good numbers with our guests landing and releasing many Kings trying to get their limits of Silver salmon so many of our long returning guests rate this week for them as the best ever in the past 20 years which says quite a bit, this of course has to do with the abundance  of King salmon in the area rather than the Silver salmon since those numbers are down from 2013.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge July 22nd – 24th, 2014

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska for the 3 days of the 22nd – 24th of July. This report is late due to the internet being down for a day or so when I had time to post it so just now getting around to catching up. The three days I am mentioning was very good for King salmon and average for the Silver salmon landing most of our King salmon limits and half or so of our Coho or Silver salmon limits. Bottom fishing remains consistently good landing limits. Overall the sportfish and commercial catch rates are dropping in the Craig area for both King salmon and Silver salmon although these past few days it seems that more King salmon are showing up. Weather was good for our three days posted here and pictures show the catch we got and for more pictures of the days fished check out our Facebook page.

The Craig Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for July 18th – 20th. The Craig sportfishing has continued to gain momentum in the Coho or Silver salmon runs as more and more fish seem to be showing up. Charter boats and local boats have been limiting on Silver salmon with moderate effort and King salmon are still in good numbers with boats getting limits as well with some effort. There has been some nice King salmon caught by the local sportfishermen with one charter boats client landing a 67 lb.. There have been some Kings caught in the 50 pound range as well although not sure how many of those fish have been entered in the local King salmon derby. We have been concentrating on landing limits of King salmon so we have not looking in along the traditional areas that the bigger King salmon are more likely to be found. We did put quite a bit of effort into searching out a 78″ plus halibut (2014 trophy minimum size limit). David Stutz who’s goal it was to land one came up short although his wife Angelina landed one at about 70″ to 72″ by our best effort of measurement which left it falling 4 inches short of the new ruling. More pictures can be seen on our Facebook page and there is a short video clip of Angelina and her big halibut she released. Thanks for reading the “blog” or my “fishing report” and I will post pictures on the Facebook if not every day every other day.

Sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge near Craig Alaska. The past three days fishing was very good and enjoying sunny skies despite some wind from the northwest which blew up during the day, but was plenty fishable in most places. It seems the Coho salmon are in a few specific spots as everyone continues to be bunched up in a few areas. We have looked around to traditional spots for this time of year but end up back with the rest of the boats chipping away at our limits. I am waiting to get my tag reports from the clipped fin Coho’s we have been catching on the inside but are sure they are from the Prince of Wales Hatchery in Klawock. It appears that without the hatchery the Coho fishing in the Craig area would be dismal this year,  but we are optimistic that the run will grow in numbers as the summer progresses. King salmon are in good numbers off the outside of St. Joe island and many boats go there to limit on them which are fairly easy to catch but not great size to them. There have been a few King salmon in the 50 pound range being landed but lucky anglers who fish the Cape or other traditional spots for large Kings. Having 6 anglers we have been going for numbers rather than size as getting our limit has been more important than getting one big one….maybe. Overall the fishing has been pretty good with most if not all boats getting limits of Kings, Silvers, and their bottom fish and again weather has been tolerably good and we hope it continues although a little less wind would be nice. Here are some pictures of the past three days with two separate groups and more pictures are posted on our Facebook page along with some video clips that are fun to look at.

Alaska sport fishing report for the Craig area and Kingfisher Lodge for the 9th, and 10th of July.  The 9th of July we had one group of 5 fishing a half day so we headed off Baker island since we had done pretty well the day before so heading back we began fishing in the early afternoon and had a great catch of King salmon and Silver salmon by 4 pm. We caught 24 Coho and 5 Kings plus a limit of small halibut caught while salmon fishing. There were 6 boats there and everyone was catching King salmon and silver salmon so was pretty darn good for a few hours time.

Dan and Scott Dahlgren with Dan’s nice 30.5 lb. “Tyee” King salmon

Today on the 10th of July with 2 boats of 9 anglers we headed again off Baker island and fishing the same spot of the previous day, we landed a King salmon early on and a few silver salmon but in time it was becoming apparent that it might be early afternoon again before the fish showed up. There were 10 to 15 boats that showed up with us as word was out that there was fish caught the previous day but within a few hours boats started going off shore into deeper water looking for salmon, which is what we did. We ended up landing a dozen silver salmon and a limit of King salmon. Captain Joel Steenstra on the Trinity did about the same on salmon and we all went halibut fishing landing nice limits of halibut with a few near the 44″ mark and the others in the 38 to 42 inch size range. We went back to our good spot of the day before hoping the afternoon bite might develope but all we caught was more King salmon and a few silver salmon. We called it a day and headed home. Word on the radio was limits of King salmon for most boats and half limits for Coho or Silver salmon. See more photo’s on our Facebook page.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 7th, & 8th, 2014

Enjoying the time together around the fire despite the inclimate weather, truely hearty souls.

Enjoying the time together around the fire despite the inclimate weather, truely hearty souls.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge and the Craig area. Today my boat had a hard time finding our King salmon while Joel landed 5 King salmon we only landed 3 although we did land 16 Silvers and Joel 20, in all the 7th was a good day but not as good as we would have liked. The 8th turned out to be much better landing our limits of King salmon although we had to work at it all day and landing a few nice Halibut along while salmon fishing. Both boats landed a total of 20 silver salmon and 12 King salmon as well as bottom fish. Largest halibut of the day was 44″. Weather was pretty tough as winds blew from the south at 20 knots as forecasted with a heavy mist of rain pelting us in the face but we stuck it out as other boats left one by one with less than their limits and chatter on the radio sounded as though boats were struggling to get their fish. Silvers still have not shown up in numbers so we are anxious for that. Word from a local lodge that they were traveling north and limiting on silvers but the distance is beyond what we want to travel and expect the Silvers to continue to show up in better numbers as the days pass by. Check out more pictures on our facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/alaskakingfisherlodge or click on the Facebook icon on the blog page.
