Prince of Wales Sportfishing report and S.E. Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for July 6th 2012. Today started out with a 5 a.m. departure with light winds hand high 50 degree temperatures, overcast skies so travel to our destination outside Noyes island was fast and comfortable. Joel’s boat limited on 4 kings within an hour or so but we came up with bare hooks and little halibut for much of the morning and finally started landing some kings and a couple silver salmon. So with 4 persons on board 3 non residents and one resident we could catch 6 King salmon, but as it was we came up short one by the end of the day landing a total of 6 king salmon, releasing one and loosing another. Halibut fishing was a bit rough as the wind picked up to about 20 knots with a incoming tide we tried to sort through the smaller halibut but with the seas a bit rough settled on some smaller halibut with intentions of putting higher goals for the following day.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 5th, 2012

Prince of Wales Sportfishing report and S.E. Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for July 5th 2012. Today was a half day for us leaving the dock around 9 am we decided to get some bottom fishing done before the forcasted winds come in the next few days. We landed our Yellow Eye, Ling cod, and a couple halibut one measuring in at just under 70″ caught by Biff McIntyre of Santa Barbara California. His wife Barb landed a nice 45″ Ling cod as well so both were pretty happy. After bottom fishing we decided to try a little salmon fishing in which we landed one King salmon and one Silver salmon for the afternoon, but word was pretty good King salmon bite early on in the morning so off we go tomorrow for our luck at King salmon.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 3rd, 2012

Darren, Kent, Lloyd, Dale's halibut with Dale, Sterling, and Biff

Prince of Wales sportfishing report and S.E. Alaska fishing report for Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales island for July 3rd 2012 was again a great day to be an angler as ocean conditions were light winds with very good King salmon and Halibut fishing as well as bottom fishing. Most charter boats unded up outside of Noyes Island again today as the schools of King salmon were in good numbers there and most if not all boats limiting on their King salmon early on. Silver salmon were less abundant today and we landed only one in the two hours salmon fishing landing 6 Kings and one silver in the two hour venture. The King salmon averaged about 20 pounds with our largest at 24 pounds. Halibut fishing was good as we searched for larger grade of halibut today and landed 6 halibut over one hundred pounds but only one was of regulation size of 68″ in this cast the fish taped out at 70″. We also landed one at 44″ and 4 more under that but respectable fish non the less and with the big one in the box no one was complaining about the smaller ones finishing the limit. The best part of the whole trip was each person was able to land a halibut over one hundred pounds so our new Canadian friends are re-booking for 2013 and we are looking forward to their return next year.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 2nd 2012

Prince of Wales sportfishing report and S.E. Alaska fishing report for Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales island for July 2nd 2012 was again a great day to be an angler as ocean conditions remained calm with very good King salmon and Halibut fishing as well as bottom fishing. Most charter boats unded up outside of Noyes Island as the schools of King salmon were in good numbers there and most if not all boats limiting on their King salmon. Silver salmon were less abundant landing only a handful in our boats. The King salmon averaged about 20 pounds with our largest at 29 pounds. Halibut fishing was good as we searched for larger grade of halibut we ended up landing and releasing one about 110 pounds and our best keeper size was in at the regulation 45″. We also landed a nice ling cod at the regulation limit as well of 45″ and it weighed in at 35 pounds. Trollers were still working the 50 fathom edge for the two days so far into the opener so my guess is they are doing at least well enough to stay put.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 1st, 2012

Prince of Wales Sportfishing report and S.E. Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on July 1st 2012. Weather was light winds and temperatures in the high fifties. Today was also the opening of the Commercial salmon troll season on the outside in area 2C. Trollers lined the outer coast searching for and catching Kings and Silver salmon, although their main fish they want to catch are the high priced King salmon. Sportfishermen in our area were again productive as the effect of the Trollers will not make a showing until tomorrow morning we will probably see a reduction of King salmon due to their efforts. Most charter boats in the Craig area limited on King salmon fairly early as well has halibut fishing that continues to improve. Silver salmon were being caught but only incidently with most boats. Kingfisher lodge boats landed about 12 silver salmon total plus the limits of King salmon.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska June 3rd, 2012

Prince of Wales Sportfishing report and S.E. Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on June 30th 2012 began with light winds andtemperatures in the high fifties. We headed for King salmon fishing and within the first half hour landed 3 king salmon and 4 silver salmon. We continued to fish for salmon although it was slower than it had been the days before it was steady and we continued to land King salmon and Silver salmon. By 10 am we had landed 7 King salmon and 8 Silver salmon and so headed out to look for our Halibut. Halibut fishing was very good with fish really biting well and we landed many but keeping only the largest which took about one hour to finish up our Halibut limits.
The Halvorsen group on Joels boat finished up on their 6 Kings by about 11 am and then went halibut fishing as well landing their limit in short order and followed up by bottom fishing for Yellow eye. Thus ended a great day at Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska.

June 29th Prince of Wales Sportfishing report, Craig Alaska

Tomorrow we will have 11 anglers out on the water so our hope is the fish will treat our guests well and we will produce some nice fish for them as for our past guests.

June 28th Prince of Wales Sportfishing report, Craig Alaska

Prince of Wales Sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on June 28th 2012 began with light winds and a wet morning with temperatures in the high fifties. We headed for King salmon fishing and within the first half hour landed 3 king salmon and 4 silver salmon. We then headed off the west coast of Baker island and joined the charter fleet there as the fishing was non stop hooking and landing of king salmon and as one viewed the boats nearby nearly all had 3 to 4 salmon on at one time. Most of the King salmon were smaller in size but the action justified being there and everyone enjoyed the action. We landed our best kings to tag us out and as we had a resident on board as well we were able to land 8 king salmon for the day. From here the crew wanted to try for large halibut and so we went shopping for large halibut and were not disappointed as we released one at 103 pounds based on his length ration which was under the 68 inch trophy size required, this fish was landed by 10 year old Turner McCurdy. We continued to land nice halibut with Blake and his dad Rob landing a nice one pictured below. Thus ended the trip for a very happy group and are rebooked for same time next year….until then best to you all.

June 26th Prince of Wales Sportfishing report, Craig Alaska

Prince of Wales Sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on June 26th 2012 began with a windy and wet morning and temperatures in the high fifties. We headed for King salmon fishing and were not disappointed as we landed 3 kings and lost two in the first hour of fishing the largest at 32 pounds in almost the exact spot we landed the same size fish the day before. Afterwards we went on out to the outside landing an additional number of fish to tag out our guests on King salmon. Salmon fishing has picked up with all boats limiting and lots and lots of King salmon around the west coast of Noyes and Baker islands.

Halibut fishing here has steadily increased in productivity in size and in numbers which pleases us and the guests. Today we had to release a 46″ halibut which was one inch longer than the 45″ maximum size limit for a Halibut on a Charter boat.
