My fishing report for our Alaska fishing lodge in Craig Alaska on the outer coast of Prince of Wales Island. The past 4 days we had 16 anglers on our 3 boats focused mostly on Silver or Coho salmon.

Coho’s seemed in good numbers with limits fairly easy to land with the fish a good average size of around 8 pounds which is good for this time of year. Pink salmon are in fairly abundant numbers as you find out trying to get the Coho getting into large schools of the Pinks at times landing up to 6 Pinks to one Coho, other times a much better ratio. Overall we landed limits of Coho the first 3 days and the last and 4th day we put our time into King salmon and Halibut, looking for a 43 inch size to the Halibut as our goal. We invested an average of 3 hours a day for 6 halibut which was time well spent.
Captain Nils boat landed limits of King salmon on the last day and as well as Kings other days with the largest at 35 pounds. We landed a small handful of Kings as well as Joel his best day limiting on Kings.

Overall the fishing is pretty good in the Craig area with most boats limiting on the species they focus on weather it is King salmon or Coho.  It appears that Coho numbers are consistent, still knocking on wood that fish numbers remain strong throughout the summer.

Thanks for reading my report. I will post more pictures on our Facebook page if you would like to see more.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales island, Craig Alaska for the above dates. The past three days weather was blown up with winds 20 to 25 knots out of the south with some rain. Ocean swells reached 11 foot so we stayed inside all three days landing limits of Coho salmon, some King salmon and Halibut.

My boat landed 3 Kings for the 3 days. We boated 2 GAF halibut one on Joel’s boat and one on my boat. Most boats in the Craig area landed limits of silvers some landing limits of King salmon. Rough water kept many boats from fishing the outside waters but my guess is most guests left happy with their catches fishing in lodges in the Craig area. We are optimistic that more fish are moving in as many points of land fish seem to be showing up, that is the Coho salmon.
Thanks for reading my fishing report and I will post more photos on our Facebook page. I will be back in 4 days!

Alaska fishing lodge fishing report for July 14th thru the 16th.

Fishing report for Alaska Kingfisher Lodge in Craig for the past three days has been very good still as runs remain strong for both King salmon and Coho salmon. King salmon may appear to be in smaller numbers but that is due to the larger number of Coho, Pinks and Dog salmon showing up. More time is spent landing the 6 fish limit on the Coho and with Pink salmon also being landed it takes away from King salmon opportunity.

My boat was short 4 Kings out of the 18 available to my anglers so my guys ended up with 14 King salmon 88 Coho out of the 108 they could have caught.
Weather was windy at 20 knots out of the northwest so boats were trying to avoid the wind and seek more protected fishing areas. Wind for the next three days looks lighter which will allow us more areas to fish.
Thanks for reading my report and check out the Facebook for more photos.

Fishing report for July 10th thru the 12th.

Sandor Hites family with a nice catch of fish!

Fishing report for July 10th thru the 12th for the Alaska fishing lodge Kingfisher in Craig Alaska. The past three days we had three separate groups in. All three days each group landed limits of kings except one boat was minus one King salmon for the 3 days fishing so King salmon are obviously still in good numbers. Coho was slow the 1st 2 days but picked up considerably up and down the outer coast of the Craig area with most charter boats doing very well if not limiting on the silvers. Our best day was 27 Coho for 6 anglers on my boat but we also ran out of bait as we were assaulted by large schools of pink salmon having six at a time on of the pesky fish.

Halibut have also moved in in certain areas in good numbers and have had to release many over 43 inches. The Fish and Game reported they had some issues with some oversize halibut that were retained by some charter vessels, so if your guide releases one that looks really good just remember he is doing his job and obeying the law that is in place.

Nothing exciting to add only looking good and this summer is looking like the fish numbers are consistently strong and building…..so we knock on wood and hope it continues throughout the summer. Check out the Facebook page clicking on the upper right hand Facebook emblem. Thanks for reading my report!

Alaska fishing report for July 6th thru the 8th.

Pat Dylan group with GAF halibut.

Pat Dylan group with GAF halibut.

Alaska fishing report for July 6th thru the 8th, Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska, an Alaska sport fishing lodge. The past 3 days fishing was very good for us landing some really nice King salmon and halibut. This group had pre-purchased 4 GAF halibut which gave us the option to keep 4 halibut any size in addition to the regular 1 halibut daily limit but with the size restriction of 43 inches. GAF or Guided Angler Fish is when the lodge sets up a lease from a commercial permit holder of halibut and then the angler who wants a halibut of any size will pay the fee for that fish which reimburses the cost of the lease, roughly about $400/fish. The Pat Dylan group had set this up this spring and had pre-purchased the 4 fish,  so we spent an afternoon looking for big ones landing and keeping 4, but also releasing at least 7 other very large halibut as we looked for our daily limit halibut. There was also some very nice ling cod and yellow eye landed over the course of the 3 days.

Big king day!

Big king day!

King salmon fishing was very good for us as well limiting each day with our second day a larger strain of fish moved in so we landed two at 46 and 47 pounds as well as 3 or 4 in the 30 pound range, the next day those fish seemed to have moved on although Joel’s boat landed a couple in the 30’s on the last day.
Coho fishing remains spotty and low numbers for now but we expect that to change at any day as the fish move in, our best day was about 16 Coho for 12 anglers. Reports are there are schools of fish off shore so our optimism remains high that we will have a consistent Coho fishery this season. I have posted more pictures and video on our Facebook page so please click on the Facebook emblem on the upper right corner to check them out. Thanks again for reading my reports!

Fishing report for June 27th thru the 30th of June

Big day for the boys from Alberta.

Big day for the boys from Alberta.

Fishing report for June 27th thru the 30th of June at Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska.
The past 4 days was exceptional fishing in the Craig area off Prince of Wales island. The King salmon and bottom fishing has been exceptional as King salmon were stacked up along the outer coast of Noyes island where most charter boats were concentrated landing limits of King salmon rather early then moving on to their bottom fishing. The limits for King salmon will drop to 1 per day for a non resident as of the 1st of July and as well the commercial fleet started this morning early and though I am not out fishing I am sure the catch rate for the sport boats will drop dramatically today as the commercial fleet will be hitting it hard for the next 5 days. Coho fishing should begin to heat up as the Coho numbers begin to build with the migration.  Word from a troller friend from Sitka informed me he saw schools of Coho on the surface as he worked his way down the coast of Baranof island this week. We have been catching some now and will change our focus to the Coho or Silver salmon for the next few months although we will continue to target King salmon.

We have been spending 3 to 4 hours a day on bottom fish looking for nice size fish and seems better numbers of halibut have been showing up as they move in from deeper water following in the baitfish and salmon,  we hope those numbers continue to build as we try to keep halibut in closer to the 43″ top of the slot limit.

Kim, Dan and Drew with their great catch of fish!

Captain Nils Baeckstroem guest landed a nice 80 plus inch halibut that would have been legal to keep as it was above the 80″ slot, but Drew Cole from San Diego California decided to let the big female go which if she survives until next February will  spawn her 4 to 5 million eggs she produces, congrats to you Drew!  Check out more photo’s and a nice video of some Humpback whales feeding off the Cape yesterday on our Facebook page. See the link above.

Thanks again for reading my report and looking forward to seeing all of you coming to the lodge this summer.

Kingfisher Charters & Lodge fishing report for June 19th thru the 21st.

Dave and John Underwood with David’s 72″ GAF halibut.

Kingfisher Charters & Lodge fishing report for June 19th thru the 21st in Craig Alaska. The past 3 days fishing was again very good although out of the 80 king salmon we could catch we landed 75 Kings and fed over 25 to the very large Stellar Sea lion who is prodigious fish thief! Regardless we did well and this very large group of outstanding individuals kept their poise despite the large carnivore raping their lines each day always keeping great respect for Gods great creatures. Since these folks had pre-arranged for GAF halibut we landed 2 monsters one at 73 inches and one 72 inches so check out our Facebook page for more pictures its too involved to add them to my Word Press blog, sorry. Overall fishing in the Craig area is very good as usual most if not all boats landing limits of salmon and halibut despite the tremendous loss of King salmon to the Sea Lions. Thanks for reading my posts!

Scott Donnelly with his first and beautiful King salmon

This is the last Fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge Craig Alaska from the 29th to the 30th of August 2015. The weather came in from very nice sunny skies and light winds to heavy rain and gale force winds to finish the season out. We were allowed one day of partial sun and good King salmon fishing off the

outer coast of Noyes island at Pineapple rock where we landed 4 out of the 6 Kings hooked and Joel landed 5 out of the 6 Kings he hooked. The largest King landed

was 30 pounds by Harley Lisherness and he thought is was the largest of his fishing career. Silver fishing turned out very good despite the weather landing limits of Coho all three days as well as our halibut. We didn’t attempt snapper or ling cod fishing due to weather conditions.
Thanks again to all who checked out my reports this summer and looking foreword to seeing you all again next year. I’m off to the Alaska Range looking for Dall sheep and the quiet and solitude of the Mountains! Wishing you all the best until 2016!

Fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge Craig Alaska from the 25th to the 27th of August.

Rick Knudsen group family and friends with great looking fish.

The fishing or catching the past three days was first of all sunny skies and beautiful ocean and again King salmon limits could be caught and we did pretty good landing almost all our daily limit of King salmon over the 3 day period but fell far short on our Silver salmon. Joel limited one day on the silvers but we were far short on 2 of the 3 days and so put our time in fishing for King salmon and bottom fish. We did land some nice fish though with some great Lings and Yellow eye.

Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska August 12th thru the 14th.

Steve Hall and John Thompson group with a great catch of fish!

Steve Hall and John Thompson group with a great catch of fish!

Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska August 12th thru the 14th. The past 3 days was great fishing as we limited on King salmon and Silver salmon 2 out of the 3 days with the largest weighing in at 40 pounds caught by Steve Hall and second by John Thompson at 30 pounds. Coho fishing remains good although not wide open by any means but were able to land Coho limits within a few hours. Some days they play hide and seek and other days they seem abundant. Kings continue to be caught mostly off Noyes island so if the ocean is nice enough and the guests have their sea legs, you get your Coho then you can head out and look for Kings. We have been focusing on the Coho, then our Halibut, with Kings last and that has been working out most of the time.
