Reports

August 19th & 20th

Prince of Wales sportfishing report from Kingfisher lodge in Craig Alaska for August 19th.  The 19th we decided to head for Port Alice up off Hecata Island since the weather was scheduled to blow in the direction that would make it tough to fish Hole in the Wall and the catching was slowing down at that spot. Port Alice was very good after our 90 minute boat ride with us landing 42 silver salmon in about 3 hours time. The guys decided that the trip was nice but too long and my gas bill proved that burning about 70 gallons for the day verses about 55 gallons normally.

August 20th was very windy with gusts to 45 mph so we mostly went for a 3 hour boat ride. The photo shows the only catch of the day.

July 16th

Stan, Brent, David Sr., David Jr., LaShawn, Larry

7 yr. old David Stutz Jr., with one of the many fish he landed and the youngest angler for 2010,2011 seasons.

July 16th the Stutz group decided to head for the same spot so we left Kingfisher Lodge near Craig for our third day of fishing. We expected the silver salmon fishing to be slow in the beginning since we had noticed slow fishing early the day before which we attributed to the later outgoing tide. Sure enough it was slow but the advantage is that it gives more opportunity for any king salmon that might be around to actually get time to bite our bait. This is exactly what happened 2 days in a row and we picked up 2 nice king salmon each day. After an hour of fishing and picking up a few silver salmon as well the catching and biting began to speed up and by 8:15 we had 33 silver salmon and 2 king salmon. For the next 45 minutes we could not get the remaining 3 silver salmon we needed and so planned to go hit our halibut spot while the tide was swinging, and then come back expecting the coho’s to be biting once again. So off we went to a rougher sea than expected due to the very light winds the past few days. I guess a system must be off shore and with the larger tides maybe humped up the water. We landed our 6 halibut and headed in to calmer water for black sea bass and a couple more ling cod which we accomplished after a time. Then back to our salmon fishing spot and sure enough we picked up our last 3 silver salmon to limit us out on them. Thus ended another great fishing trip and the group of 6 figured they landed approximately 220 plus fish with their salmon and bottom fish. So catching was what they did here this year as last year the salmon fishing was very poor this same week. Until next year same week.

July 12th

July 12th we left Kingfisher Lodge dock near Craig Alaska at 5 am headed for the Cape on Noyes Island where we had finished the day before. I expected a rough ride out but was good and calm till we got to Pt. Incarnation off of Steamboat Bay where the swell from the ocean began to slow us down. We arrived after a bit of a slogging up the strait where we were the 3rd boat to arrive. Dropping our mooching rigs with our cut plug herring Chuck instantly hooked into a nice 18 pound king salmon which made him the first to catch a king salmon 3 days in a row which is a pretty impressive display of luck. Catching salmon was very steady getting singles, doubles, tripples, and quads but not always landing the silver salmon. Dan landed a nice 30 pound king salmon early on as well and after that no more king salmon but lots of silver salmon. By 10 am we had 19 silver salmon and 2 king salmon, but catching slowed way down. With a stiff westerly blowing and a big sea running we stayed put rather than go get beat up on the outside waters where we had done so well previous days. At 11 am we went looking for our halibut which we caught within a short amount of time since looking for any halibut over 37 inches is a waste of time. We spent the rest of the day looking for more king salmon with no luck and landed a few more silver salmon. Thus ended the 3rd day for the Weyerhauser family resulting in 13 king salmon, 60 silver salmon, 15 halibut and a variety of bottom fish for the trip. Until next year same time same place.
