Sportfishing report for Kingfisher lodge on Prince of Wales Island, Craig Alaska July 11th, 2012 was a great day to be an Angler especially if your name is Larry Whitefoot who landed a wopper 49 pound King salmon, unfortunately he didn’t buy a King salmon derby ticket so might have been a little richer if he had of.
My boat went to east Addington and landed one King salmon and 14 or so silver salmon, not counting about 75 small halibut that we had to let loose. Joel did the same but landed one or two King salmon and 3 limits  of silver salmon or 18, as well Rafael who also landed several limits of silvers and one King salmon. We all ended up going south to Granite point where boats were limiting on King salmon very early but as we had gone later the bite slowed down. Our boat landed the remainder of our King salmon which was 6 and then went out for halibut which we landed 6 nice ones in a couple hours fishing. Joel did the same landing some nice 45″ halibut and having to release 5 over one hundred pounds as they did not fall into the 68″ and over limit. Rafael’s boat also went out halibut fishing landing his limit of nice halibut.

Sooo…the story of Larry’s big king as told by his buddies goes like this. Larry was feeling pretty “chummy” due to the flu bug and after a two hour nap came out made 2 casts and hooked the big one weighed in at the dock as 49 pounds. Rafael was the skipper so hats off to both of them.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Prince of Wales, Craig alaska July10th

Mike, Bill, Curtis, Chuck, Dan, Jens, and Chuck

Sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales in Craig Alaska for July 10th started out with a South West wind so we sped up to Noyes island where we had fished the previous trip while Joel and Rapheal went off Baker island looking for salmon. We started out landing a couple king salmon fairly soon then a third but that slowed down so we moved on down the beach where other boats were landing fish and we started landing silvers and King salmon although the baby halibut were in such prodigious numbers that it wore me and all my leaders out trying to keep releasing them and rebaiting. By 11:30 we had 19 coho’s and 6 King salmon so were happy with that. Joel and Raphael had limited on Kings with their groups and moved on to Halibut as we did as well.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

Robert with a nice halibut.

July 8th sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales island in Craig Alaska began with flat calm water, and overcast skies. We went to the outside of Noyes Island to where we fished the last couple of days and fishing there had slowed down quite a bit but were successful in landing one King salmon per boat and sat there from 6:30 am to 9 am or so then went bottom fishing landing a fair number of nice halibut having to again cut loose 2 in the 55″ range since 2012 regulation is for a 58″ or larger to retain the trophy halibut. It is quite a feat trying to measure a large halibut using my special made measuring stick as the halibut is not always very cooperative with this effort as the ocean swell and the movement of the fish makes it very difficult. You have to use a little “Kentucky Windage” almost but in doing make darn sure that the fish is well above the length of the stick before committing to killing it since once you do you had better be right. So we ended the halibut expedition with a nice catch including a nice Ling cod which limited out our guests as they needed one more to finish up there quota of one lingcod under 45″ each.

King salmon was again next on our agenda as we headed back to Pinnapple rock to try our luck and withing a few minutes landed the two kings we doubled up on which put us up to 3 kings and still shy of the 6 we needed to tag out since we had a resident on board that could catch 3 himself. We moved on to a new spot and were readily catching Coho salmon pretty regularly and then finished up with our Kings as well. Joel came in behind us after he had landed a nice catch of Halibut and also landed 15 silvers and a total of 3 out of 4 King salmon for the day.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 5th, 2012

Prince of Wales Sportfishing report and S.E. Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for July 5th 2012. Today was a half day for us leaving the dock around 9 am we decided to get some bottom fishing done before the forcasted winds come in the next few days. We landed our Yellow Eye, Ling cod, and a couple halibut one measuring in at just under 70″ caught by Biff McIntyre of Santa Barbara California. His wife Barb landed a nice 45″ Ling cod as well so both were pretty happy. After bottom fishing we decided to try a little salmon fishing in which we landed one King salmon and one Silver salmon for the afternoon, but word was pretty good King salmon bite early on in the morning so off we go tomorrow for our luck at King salmon.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 3rd, 2012

Darren, Kent, Lloyd, Dale's halibut with Dale, Sterling, and Biff

Prince of Wales sportfishing report and S.E. Alaska fishing report for Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales island for July 3rd 2012 was again a great day to be an angler as ocean conditions were light winds with very good King salmon and Halibut fishing as well as bottom fishing. Most charter boats unded up outside of Noyes Island again today as the schools of King salmon were in good numbers there and most if not all boats limiting on their King salmon early on. Silver salmon were less abundant today and we landed only one in the two hours salmon fishing landing 6 Kings and one silver in the two hour venture. The King salmon averaged about 20 pounds with our largest at 24 pounds. Halibut fishing was good as we searched for larger grade of halibut today and landed 6 halibut over one hundred pounds but only one was of regulation size of 68″ in this cast the fish taped out at 70″. We also landed one at 44″ and 4 more under that but respectable fish non the less and with the big one in the box no one was complaining about the smaller ones finishing the limit. The best part of the whole trip was each person was able to land a halibut over one hundred pounds so our new Canadian friends are re-booking for 2013 and we are looking forward to their return next year.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 1st, 2012

Prince of Wales Sportfishing report and S.E. Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on July 1st 2012. Weather was light winds and temperatures in the high fifties. Today was also the opening of the Commercial salmon troll season on the outside in area 2C. Trollers lined the outer coast searching for and catching Kings and Silver salmon, although their main fish they want to catch are the high priced King salmon. Sportfishermen in our area were again productive as the effect of the Trollers will not make a showing until tomorrow morning we will probably see a reduction of King salmon due to their efforts. Most charter boats in the Craig area limited on King salmon fairly early as well has halibut fishing that continues to improve. Silver salmon were being caught but only incidently with most boats. Kingfisher lodge boats landed about 12 silver salmon total plus the limits of King salmon.

June 26th Prince of Wales Sportfishing report, Craig Alaska

Prince of Wales Sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on June 26th 2012 began with a windy and wet morning and temperatures in the high fifties. We headed for King salmon fishing and were not disappointed as we landed 3 kings and lost two in the first hour of fishing the largest at 32 pounds in almost the exact spot we landed the same size fish the day before. Afterwards we went on out to the outside landing an additional number of fish to tag out our guests on King salmon. Salmon fishing has picked up with all boats limiting and lots and lots of King salmon around the west coast of Noyes and Baker islands.

Halibut fishing here has steadily increased in productivity in size and in numbers which pleases us and the guests. Today we had to release a 46″ halibut which was one inch longer than the 45″ maximum size limit for a Halibut on a Charter boat.
