Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, in Craig Alaska for June 24th. Today we left the dock at 5 am and headed off Cape Felix since that has been the best salmon fishing in the Craig area. Today was good fishing but we had to work for our fish while Joel finished up early on his 12 King salmon we were still at 7 and needed 5 more. The bite seemed to slow down and as there had been many boats from the local lodges they were beginning to thin out either by limiting or getting impatient and looking elsewhere. We stuck it out and in the end there was only a handfull of boats but the bite came on again later and we were able to finish up with a great catch of Alaska salmon.

Vandel, Underwood (10)Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the 19th and 20th of June continues to show strong runs of King salmon.  Sitka is showing very strong runs as well as those fish migrate down the outside waters of S.E. Alaska to the Craig area. The 19th and 20th limits were easily had within a few hours or less for most if not all boats. Kingfisher lodge landing their limit of 26 King salmon for two boats in a few hours. Their were two Alaska residents on board so with their 3 King salmon limit per day made for 14 King salmon on Joels boat. Halibut fishing has been tougher for us this summer although John Underwood landed a 100 pound halibut yesteday we had to let it go, and we struggled to find halibut of any size. Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska June 16th, 2014

Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska. Today was outstanding again for the Alaska King salmon fishing as we limited on King salmon which was 12 fish by 9 am and most boats were doing the same in the area we were fishing off Sumez island. Halibut fishing was also very good when we finally found them althought their wasn’t any record breakers we were happy with the fish we landed. So far the fishing is reflective of the Alaska Department of fish and Game 2014 predictions of the Chinook or King salmon abundance. Photo’s below are an indication of what hopefully will continue this year.

June 11, 2014 fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

McIntyre group

Today fishing was tough for most boats as chatter on the radio was tough fishing, but Captaing Joel did well catching his limit of 12 King salmon and us coming in second catching only 6 on our boat. Being in the right spot at the right time makes all the difference in the world and if you are not were the fish are you will end up short which is what we did. We did get a few nice halibut though while salmon fishing which helped out a bunch. We put in a long day trying for those remaining 6 Kings but to no avail.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  August 19th was again forecasted for heavy seas and 20 knot winds although we fished on the inside and kept out of the big water and my boat landed our Silver salmon in close to town while Joel and his crew went and tested the outside waters. They were happy to find a nice spot with a large swell but no wind and pleasant fishing with great catching of big Coho’s landing their limits in short order. Halibut fishing was again good with our boat landing a nice limit of  35″ to 45″ butts, and Joel’s boat landing a nice 68″ 170 pound halibut by Talon Stephan. Joel was guiding the Stephan family from North Dakota for their family fishing vacation and they said it was their best family vacation ever which says quite a bit for this area and their captain.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  August 13th we left the lodge with light winds and flat water, overcast skies, and high in the mid 60’s which was a great day to catch King salmon, Silver salmon and bottom fish. We started at the Pineapple rock which was awful dead looking and left after 15 minutes or so then moved north and dropping in tripled on beautiful King salmon, then it was non stop catching of big Coho’s or Silver salmon (most of these fish are averaging 10 pounds) until our limit was met at 8:30 a.m. Joel’s boat landed the largest trophy Silver of the year to date, here at Kingfisher Lodge at just over 18 pounds by Clint Olsen. Halibut fishing proved to be a great day as we landed several in the 40 to 45 inch range as well as some beauties at 60 or so inches that we had to let go due to the slot limit but the guys got a kick out of bringing them up. All these fish we turn loose are still full of vigor as they speed to the bottom or just swim off as we release them which makes us all feel good knowing they will survive another day and continue to perpetuate.

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for August 5th & 6th again is consistent salmon fishing with fish most everywhere you want to fish. Some places are slower than others but you should be able to catch a salmon wherever you drop a line with any bait or lure remotely resembling  a herring or needle fish. Yesterday leaving the dock off the lodge their was a school of 20 or more Silvers swimming on the surface although we tossed our bait at them they swam off so we felt that fishing off the dock wouldn’t be what the guys came to Alaska to do so we headed for more secluded fishing. King salmon fishing again is still good and even caught one with the halibut gear dropping to the bottom so seems you can’t help but catch a salmon this year.  We worked hard for our Halibut last couple days looking for the barn door but came up short landing 5 or 6 in the 75 to 130 pound range, just too long for the 45″ minimum and too short for the 68″ minimum on maximum size. We did land some that were the 35″ to 45″ range which are the best in my opinion anyhow. They look good and taste better and leave the big females to do their spawning!

July 31 thru August 2nd sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

Cody holding Joan's Wolf eel.

Cody holding Joan’s Wolf eel.

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the past 3 days fishing was again stellar fishing with limits of all fish readily caught as Silver salmon runs continue to stay strong for sport fishermen as well as commercial boats. King salmon fishing remains strong as well as the season continues it is very evident that Alaska Department of Fish and game under estimated the number of King salmon in the ocean. Limits of King salmon although limited to one per non resident angler for the remainder of the season is quite easy to accomplish as not only the sport anglers are landing fish but some of the trollers I talked with have been releasing many King salmon as well. Joan Pahor caught this Wolf eel while fishing for King salmon, her first and our first for the season.

July 26th sport fishing report for Prince of Wales Island, Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

Dick O'Grady with his 74" 215 pound halibut

Dick O’Grady with his 74″ 215 pound halibut

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska. Craig is located in southern south east Alaska and boasts some of the most productive salmon and halibut fishing in the world due to its great location. The Prince of Wales sport fishing report for all three days has been business as usual for 2013 sport fishing and that is lots of fish or I should day lots of salmon. Today was no different than the whole summer as fish continue to flood into the Noyes Island area both King salmon and Silver salmon are abundant with most boats limiting within an hour of fishing. It helps that so far few seine boats have been fishing the outside area due to few pinks in close to the shore I assume that is why they are somewhere else. Alaska salmon fishing appears that it will remain strong throughout the summer which is our hope. Weather continues to be unreal with calm seas and sunny skies. Today we landed some nice King salmon as well as silvers salmon, Halibut fishing was outstanding with Dick O’Grady landing a 74″ 215 pound Halibut and Larry Haas loosing one up to the boat that was within an inch of Dick’s. We also released several over one hundred pounds due to the under 68″ rule but also landed some nice 45″ and under. Joel’s boat landed many King salmon and limits of Silver, Yellow Eye, Ling Cod etc. One large Ling Cod had a full King salmon in it’s belly which was pretty impressive. What predators they are!
