Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska for the 3 days of the 22nd – 24th of July. This report is late due to the internet being down for a day or so when I had time to post it so just now getting around to catching up. The three days I am mentioning was very good for King salmon and average for the Silver salmon landing most of our King salmon limits and half or so of our Coho or Silver salmon limits. Bottom fishing remains consistently good landing limits. Overall the sportfish and commercial catch rates are dropping in the Craig area for both King salmon and Silver salmon although these past few days it seems that more King salmon are showing up. Weather was good for our three days posted here and pictures show the catch we got and for more pictures of the days fished check out our Facebook page.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska. Fishing off the outer coast today was very good early and then later in the afternoon as well. We landed limits of Kings and had to let a few go as well as landing a 37.2 pound King salmon. Cori had requesteds a 40 pound King salmon when we left the dock this morning for his 10th wedding anniversary and the last salmon of the day was this 37.2 pound fish a few pounds under but a “Tyee” all the same, good job Cori!

Also check out our facebook for more pictures.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, in Craig Alaska for June 24th. Today we left the dock at 5 am and headed off Cape Felix since that has been the best salmon fishing in the Craig area. Today was good fishing but we had to work for our fish while Joel finished up early on his 12 King salmon we were still at 7 and needed 5 more. The bite seemed to slow down and as there had been many boats from the local lodges they were beginning to thin out either by limiting or getting impatient and looking elsewhere. We stuck it out and in the end there was only a handfull of boats but the bite came on again later and we were able to finish up with a great catch of Alaska salmon.

Alaska sportfishing report Kingfisher Lodge, June 17th 2014

Alaska salmon fishing at its best! Today we were looking at gale force winds predicted so leaving the dock shortly after 5 am we went straight to the fishing grounds in hopes of landing our salmon as our guests were only fishing a half day. When we reached open water the wind was blowing 25 knots and wave height at about 4 feet, by the time we reached our fishing destination the winds were gusting 30 to 35 knots but the minute we dropped in we hooked up 3 Kings and with a very fast drift we landed 4 Kings. The next two drifts we landed our 12 King salmon and released 4 others with a close to record time of 45 minutes to limit on King salmon of 12 fish. This was also a fiasco with the gusty winds blowing the boat so everyone had to work together to keep from loosing the fish as they ran about under and around the boat loosing only one to the spinning propellers. Back at the dock by 7:50 am!

Back to the dock by 8 am with limits of King salmon! Good Job!

Captain Chuck with Carl Vedders 178 pound trophy Halibut.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  August 15th we left the lodge with no wind, flat water, overcast skies, and high in the mid 60’s which was a great day to catch Silver salmon and bottom fish. We started locally for our Coho’s and landing a few limits moved on to the outer coast which was a little slower landing the limits of 66 Coho for 11 anglers but completed the job by 10 am then off for our Halibut and Ling cod, yellow eye as we needed a few more to tag out for the group. The group landed a great catch of fish in the 40″ to 45″ size range then Carl Vedders landed a beautiful 69 1/2 inch trophy weighing in at 178 pounds. When he brought it up it had a flasher in it’s mouth as it had eaten a Silver salmon off a troller and got the hoochi and flasher as a memento, so when she came up that flasher was along side her and would have been interesting to see how hard it pulled on the trollers lines. After the excitement from the group from landing the trophy halibut we went off to fish for our ling Cod and Jeff Nelson landed a beautiful trophy ling taping in at just 45″ which is the maximum in the slot limit unless you land one over 55″ which we have not done yet.

July 31 thru August 2nd sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

Cody holding Joan's Wolf eel.

Cody holding Joan’s Wolf eel.

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the past 3 days fishing was again stellar fishing with limits of all fish readily caught as Silver salmon runs continue to stay strong for sport fishermen as well as commercial boats. King salmon fishing remains strong as well as the season continues it is very evident that Alaska Department of Fish and game under estimated the number of King salmon in the ocean. Limits of King salmon although limited to one per non resident angler for the remainder of the season is quite easy to accomplish as not only the sport anglers are landing fish but some of the trollers I talked with have been releasing many King salmon as well. Joan Pahor caught this Wolf eel while fishing for King salmon, her first and our first for the season.

July 26th sport fishing report for Prince of Wales Island, Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska. Craig is located in southern south east Alaska and boasts some of the most productive salmon and halibut fishing in the world due to its great location. The Prince of Wales sport fishing report for all three days has been business as usual for 2013 sport fishing and that is lots of fish or I should day lots of salmon. Today was no different than the whole summer as fish continue to flood into the Noyes Island area both King salmon and Silver salmon are abundant with most boats limiting within an hour of fishing. It helps that so far few seine boats have been fishing the outside area due to few pinks in close to the shore I assume that is why they are somewhere else. Alaska salmon fishing appears that it will remain strong throughout the summer which is our hope. Weather continues to be unreal with calm seas and sunny skies. Today we landed some nice King salmon as well as silvers salmon, Halibut fishing was outstanding with Dick O’Grady landing a 74″ 215 pound Halibut and Larry Haas loosing one up to the boat that was within an inch of Dick’s. We also released several over one hundred pounds due to the under 68″ rule but also landed some nice 45″ and under. Joel’s boat landed many King salmon and limits of Silver, Yellow Eye, Ling Cod etc. One large Ling Cod had a full King salmon in it’s belly which was pretty impressive. What predators they are!

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales Island. Craig is located in southern south east Alaska and boasts some of the most productive salmon and halibut fishing in the world due to its great location. If you come to Craig you will experience great fishing, great scenery and wildlife all without the crowds of towns like Sitka, Ketchikan and other larger coastal towns. When you come to Craig to sport fish you get the whole package of fishing unlike anywhere else in the world since this area has it all.

Today we did business as usual except we landed our King salmon as if they were penned up waiting for us. Captain Joel had already landed his King salmon the previous three days so we were needing ours as we had focused mostly on silver salmon and bottom fish our previous 2 days. Today our focus was first Silver salmon, then King salmon, and third bottom fish. So after we landed our silver salmon we went searching for King salmon which avoiding the sea lions and other boats went on the prowl in new areas and were rewarded by a great King salmon bite that lasted 40 minutes or so, but ended in a great catch of King salmon. Then off to get our Halibut which proved to be another long day trying to catch the “big one” but did land a few smaller and one nice 44″ butt. Let the photo’s tell the tale.

July 19th sport fishing report from Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on Prince of Wales Island. Craig is located in southern south east Alaska and boasts some of the most productive salmon and halibut fishing in the world due to its great location. If you come to Craig you will experience great fishing, great scenery and wildlife all without the crowds of towns like Sitka, Ketchikan and other larger coastal towns. When you come to Craig to sport fish you get the whole package of fishing unlike anywhere else in the world since this area has it all.  Today Captain Joel Steenstra upheld the reputation of this area by landing a great King salmon weighing in at 47.7 pounds which isn’t a monster such as a 70 pounder, but a great trophy King salmon in any fishery. Luke Deghetaldi leads the Craig Klawock King salmon derby with his nice fish he landed today, congratulations to both him and Captain Joel. Joel said that 3 other boats hooked up on King salmon the same time he did and with Stellar Sea Lions cleaning up most Anglers catches these days he was pretty worried about the fish they had on but the fish god’s were good to Joel and Luke today as they picked on the other 3 boats who all lost their fish to the sea lions leaving Joel and Luke to land the trophy King salmon. We spent our time looking for the elusive “monster Halibut” as David has his hopes on one around 300 pounds to beat last years 215 pounder. After 6 hours we came up short but did land a respectable catch and released several in the 45″ – 68″ slot.

Today was no different as limits were easily acquired by early morning then off to the halibut fishing where both boats had to release oversized halibut but did land some nice ones under 45″ but no over 68″.
