Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Charters and Lodge in Craig Alaska a family run fishing lodge where catching is our business. The past three days the Coho salmon have been coming in very good numbers near the outer coast with the fish averaging around 10 pounds live weight, the largest this last week at 12 pounds and the previous week we landed several at 16 pounds. It is amazing to see the size of these fish looking much like small King salmon,  everyone is exceptionally happy with what they have been catching. King salmon numbers  have tapered off with the commercial troll fleet having had 5 days of fishing and as the King salmon are moving on to their respective rivers to spawn. Landing limits of Coho by 8:30 am we then have been spending time looking for nice halibut, Ling cod, etc so not spending time looking for King salmon. The past 3 days all boats in the Craig charter fleet have been limiting on Coho in a reletively short time since the Coho numbers are up so well.  I will be getting tag reports from ADF&G for the Coho’s that we landed that were tagged and I expect the majority of these fish to be POWHA fish on the Klawock river. I take my hat off to the staff there raising these beauties as we enjoy their return to the Klawock river and how important this hatchery is to S.E. Alaska sport and commercial fishery.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge and the Craig area. Today my boat had a hard time finding our King salmon while Joel landed 5 King salmon we only landed 3 although we did land 16 Silvers and Joel 20, in all the 7th was a good day but not as good as we would have liked. The 8th turned out to be much better landing our limits of King salmon although we had to work at it all day and landing a few nice Halibut along while salmon fishing. Both boats landed a total of 20 silver salmon and 12 King salmon as well as bottom fish. Largest halibut of the day was 44″. Weather was pretty tough as winds blew from the south at 20 knots as forecasted with a heavy mist of rain pelting us in the face but we stuck it out as other boats left one by one with less than their limits and chatter on the radio sounded as though boats were struggling to get their fish. Silvers still have not shown up in numbers so we are anxious for that. Word from a local lodge that they were traveling north and limiting on silvers but the distance is beyond what we want to travel and expect the Silvers to continue to show up in better numbers as the days pass by. Dale, Rod, Ron, Lloyd, Doug and Dave with a great catch today.

Salmon fishing in Alaska these past few days has continued to be strong as Washington State fish continue to be caught here off the outer coast of Prince of Wales island. We are getting at least half a dozen tagged or fin clipped fish with reports from ADF&G coming back as Colombia river fish. Past two days the Kent Halvorsen group from Alberta Canada has been limiting on King salmon with the largest just under 30 pounds. The Stellar sea lions have been well fed by my boat as Joel seems to be invisible to the salmon eating monsters. We have lost 12 King salmon to them over the past two days and our frustration is at a peak. We blame Kent Halvorsen for his politically incorrect comments about the fish eating mammels and believe they are targeting us based on his statements. We are looking forward to the commercial fleet starting and am sure that the sea lions will get an education here in the next few days, something a charter boat would not dream of doing is educating sea lions. Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska. Fishing off the outer coast today was very good early and then later in the afternoon as well. We landed limits of Kings and had to let a few go as well as landing a 37.2 pound King salmon. Cori had requesteds a 40 pound King salmon when we left the dock this morning for his 10th wedding anniversary and the last salmon of the day was this 37.2 pound fish a few pounds under but a “Tyee” all the same, good job Cori!

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, in Craig Alaska for June 24th. Today we left the dock at 5 am and headed off Cape Felix since that has been the best salmon fishing in the Craig area. Today was good fishing but we had to work for our fish while Joel finished up early on his 12 King salmon we were still at 7 and needed 5 more. The bite seemed to slow down and as there had been many boats from the local lodges they were beginning to thin out either by limiting or getting impatient and looking elsewhere. We stuck it out and in the end there was only a handfull of boats but the bite came on again later and we were able to finish up with a great catch of Alaska salmon.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska June 23rd, 2014

Sackett and Dad Shawn Andres with a beautiful King salmon caught by Sackett Andres.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge an Alaska sportfishing lodge. June 23rd was the ending of the 30 knot wind storm that had blown in on Sunday the 22nd stirring up the ocean to 10ft. seas or so. We decided to leave the dock a little later as both groups going and coming had to take the ferry to make their flights. We went to Granite pt. first off as the ocean had layed down to 4 or 5 foot swells and dropping in first was 8 year old Sackett Andres from Montana who immediately hooked a nice King salmon but after a few minutes of fighting the fish it was attacked and eaten by a very large bull Stellar Sea lion. This Sea Lion continued to harrass us eating 4 out of the 5 King salmon we hooked in less than one hour. After having enough of that entertainment we decided to go north to Noyes island where word was there was some fish and maybe less Sea Lion activity. We arrived and after a hour hooked our first King salmon and just as we thought we would land the fish the fish was also eaten by the local bull Sea lion. We talked to one of the other boat captains and he said he lost 9 out of the 10 King salmon to the pesky Sea Lions. We decided to burn some gas and headed south to avoid the fish eating mammels and try to get some in the boat. We finished the day with half our limits as Joel ended up with his 10 King salmon by sticking it out off Noyes island.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska. August 19th

Talon Stephan with his 68" 170 pound trophy Halibut

Talon Stephan with his 68″ 170 pound trophy Halibut

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  August 19th was again forecasted for heavy seas and 20 knot winds although we fished on the inside and kept out of the big water and my boat landed our Silver salmon in close to town while Joel and his crew went and tested the outside waters. They were happy to find a nice spot with a large swell but no wind and pleasant fishing with great catching of big Coho’s landing their limits in short order. Halibut fishing was again good with our boat landing a nice limit of  35″ to 45″ butts, and Joel’s boat landing a nice 68″ 170 pound halibut by Talon Stephan. Joel was guiding the Stephan family from North Dakota for their family fishing vacation and they said it was their best family vacation ever which says quite a bit for this area and their captain.

Steve Hall group with another outstanding catch of fish!

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  August 13th we left the lodge with light winds and flat water, overcast skies, and high in the mid 60’s which was a great day to catch King salmon, Silver salmon and bottom fish. We started at the Pineapple rock which was awful dead looking and left after 15 minutes or so then moved north and dropping in tripled on beautiful King salmon, then it was non stop catching of big Coho’s or Silver salmon (most of these fish are averaging 10 pounds) until our limit was met at 8:30 a.m. Joel’s boat landed the largest trophy Silver of the year to date, here at Kingfisher Lodge at just over 18 pounds by Clint Olsen. Halibut fishing proved to be a great day as we landed several in the 40 to 45 inch range as well as some beauties at 60 or so inches that we had to let go due to the slot limit but the guys got a kick out of bringing them up. All these fish we turn loose are still full of vigor as they speed to the bottom or just swim off as we release them which makes us all feel good knowing they will survive another day and continue to perpetuate.

July 27th sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

John and his 39.7 pound King salmon.

John and his 39.7 pound King salmon.

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska. Craig is located in southern south east Alaska and boasts some of the most productive salmon and halibut fishing in the world due to its great location. Today was a great day for trophy King salmon and Silver salmon fishing as the previous day we landed 5 King salmon and needed one more for today which was tagged out by John O’Hayre landing a 39.7 pound King which was entered in the Craig-Klawock King salmon Derby. John fought the King for over an hour and I expected it to be in the mid to upper forty pound range so was surprised it wasn’t bigger but just was a tough fish to land. Silver fishing was accomplished very early on as Silver salmon fishing remained strong and most boats limiting early on salmon. Halibut fishing remains good but time must be spent to consistently land upper grade fish so expect to put time into Halibut fishing if you want a good grade of fish. A good grade in my book is 32″ to 45″ with an occasional over 68″.
