Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 15th – 20th, 2017

A great day fishin

Another great day at sea!

Awesome catch

Great family fishing vacation

Alaska Kingfisher Lodge fishing report July 15th thru July 20th,2017. Sorry last turnover day we had to replace two motors on the Trinity plus a host of other duties and catch up left me without time to do the report. Since my last report the Coho and Halibut fishing has kicked off to very good landing limits quite easily and many boats commenting on the radio chatter that they cant find the Kings due to too many Coho!! Tough day, or great problem to have. The last group had GAF fish to land so we spent a large part our days fishing for big halibut and we were not disappointed landing many large halibut as the photos will attest. I will let the photos speak for themselves and look forward to the upcoming fishermen and thanks for reading my report.

Great variety

Fishing report for June 27th thru the 30th of June

Big day for the boys from Alberta.

Big day for the boys from Alberta.

Fishing report for June 27th thru the 30th of June at Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska.
The past 4 days was exceptional fishing in the Craig area off Prince of Wales island. The King salmon and bottom fishing has been exceptional as King salmon were stacked up along the outer coast of Noyes island where most charter boats were concentrated landing limits of King salmon rather early then moving on to their bottom fishing. The limits for King salmon will drop to 1 per day for a non resident as of the 1st of July and as well the commercial fleet started this morning early and though I am not out fishing I am sure the catch rate for the sport boats will drop dramatically today as the commercial fleet will be hitting it hard for the next 5 days. Coho fishing should begin to heat up as the Coho numbers begin to build with the migration.  Word from a troller friend from Sitka informed me he saw schools of Coho on the surface as he worked his way down the coast of Baranof island this week. We have been catching some now and will change our focus to the Coho or Silver salmon for the next few months although we will continue to target King salmon.

We have been spending 3 to 4 hours a day on bottom fish looking for nice size fish and seems better numbers of halibut have been showing up as they move in from deeper water following in the baitfish and salmon,  we hope those numbers continue to build as we try to keep halibut in closer to the 43″ top of the slot limit.

Captain Nils Baeckstroem guest landed a nice 80 plus inch halibut that would have been legal to keep as it was above the 80″ slot, but Drew Cole from San Diego California decided to let the big female go which if she survives until next February will  spawn her 4 to 5 million eggs she produces, congrats to you Drew!  Check out more photo’s and a nice video of some Humpback whales feeding off the Cape yesterday on our Facebook page. See the link above.

Thanks again for reading my report and looking forward to seeing all of you coming to the lodge this summer.

Kingfisher Lodge fishing report for June 23rd thru the 25th

Andres group with a 63″ 127 lb. GAF halibut

Fishing report for Prince of Whales sport fishing at Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for June 23rd thru the 25th. We had 15 anglers up from 2 separate groups with the potential for 90 King salmon in a 3 day period, fishing has been outstanding landing 90 of the 90. Most all anglers from lodges and weekend warriors have been able to land their limits of King salmon in the Craig area. Our largest King for the past three days was in the high 20’s and have not heard of any wall hangers not saying there haven’t been any. We are landing some nice halibut and as our group had pre-purchased a GAF halibut we went after and landed a 63 inch fish weighing in at 127 pounds according to the book of weight to length chart, we also landed a variety of large halibut but chose to keep only the 63″ fish being the largest landed. Commercial season opens on the 1st of July so we can expect King salmon numbers to decline but also the limits for King salmon are reduced to 1 per day 6 in possession after the 1st. We hope that the silver salmon will be showing up in numbers here shortly, so far we have only landed a few for the lodge this year. Thanks again for reading the report and check out Facebook for more photos and video clips.

This is the last Fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge Craig Alaska from the 29th to the 30th of August 2015. The weather came in from very nice sunny skies and light winds to heavy rain and gale force winds to finish the season out. We were allowed one day of partial sun and good King salmon fishing off the

outer coast of Noyes island at Pineapple rock where we landed 4 out of the 6 Kings hooked and Joel landed 5 out of the 6 Kings he hooked. The largest King landed

was 30 pounds by Harley Lisherness and he thought is was the largest of his fishing career. Silver fishing turned out very good despite the weather landing limits of Coho all three days as well as our halibut. We didn’t attempt snapper or ling cod fishing due to weather conditions.
Thanks again to all who checked out my reports this summer and looking foreword to seeing you all again next year. I’m off to the Alaska Range looking for Dall sheep and the quiet and solitude of the Mountains! Wishing you all the best until 2016!

day of the trip the weather turned on us to SW 30 knots and 13 foot seas so we didn’t venture out to the outside of Noyes island due to rough seas and windy conditions. The 2 separate groups had a great time and caught lots of fish!

Alaska Fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge July 31st thru August 2nd 2015. This past 3 days was outstanding for both Coho and King salmon limiting all days on both species and most boats if not all charter boats doing the same. Commercial trollers are closed for King salmon and while trolling for Silver salmon they have been releasing many King salmon off shore so hopefully the King salmon fishing will remain strong for some time yet. There are usually at least one 50 plus pounder caught each day in the Craig area although we have not had the opportunity to land such a fine fish ourselves with 42 our largest this season. The Lyle Randon group landed quite a few large halibut in the 100 to 210 pound class looking for a nicer grade of Halibut and in hopes of landing the 80 incher. I will post more photo’s on our Facebook page.

Pat Dylan group with a great catch of fish!

Alaska Fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska Prince of Wales island for July 5th thru July 8th, 2015. We had 3 groups in for a total of 14 guests fishing off of 3 boats, two of ours and one Catch a King boat. King salmon fishing was very good with boats landing limits of Kings (one per day July regulation) and mostly landing limits of Coho or Silver salmon along with bottom fish. “Clincher’s Cove” (inside story on the name) was a great spot that produced a nice bunch of King salmon as well as regulation size halibut along with one about 150 pounds that Blake had to release due to the slot size needed to be 80 inches long to keep. During the 3 days most anglers landed limits of King salmon and close to limits of Silvers every day.

June 19th thru June 21st 2015 fishing report

Jeff Vandel group with a great catch of fish!

Prince of Wales sport fishing report for June 19th thru June 21st 2015 at Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska. The past 3 days fishing for our group of 12 was pretty good overall  but it went as follows. The weather all three days was outstanding with flat calm seas and partly cloudy to clear skies as the days progressed. First day fishing both boats landed their limits and many boats in the Craig area doing the same by the sound of it on the radio. Day two was a different story and almost every boat struggled to get the King salmon my boat only landing 3 and Joels boat landing 6 for the day. Day 3 was much better with 21 Kings landed between 12 anglers and sounded like more fish were landed with the other charter boats as well.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge August 28th- August 30th, 2014

Steve Binder group with a great catch of fish!

Steve Binder group with a great catch of fish!

Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska a family run fishing lodge since 1994. The last three days fishing for the lodge for 2014 brought us 12 anglers turned out pretty good considering the weather that blew in after the second day. The first day we did very well landing limits of silvers and nice halibut, but by the 29th the winds picked up to 25 knots with rain so we did well on the Coho’s but got very wet in the process, by the time we got back to the dock everyone was soaked and ready for a shower. It appears the Coho run has tapered off with what charter boats were left were not getting full limits although we did end up within a fish or two of our limits except for the last day we were a limit short. We did land nice limits of Halibut and everyone was very happy over all with the trip as the last day the weather was nicer with light winds and occasional sun. This concludes my sportfishing reports for our lodge for 2014 and we thank all our customers that came up fishing and have been reading my fishing blog. By writing the blog it keeps a fishing log of the seasons fishing for me and for others looking to come up fishing in the future what we do here at Kingfisher Lodge. We are looking forward to seeing many of you next year as most everyone has rebooked for 2015, thanks again for all your support in our business!
