Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska. Today we headed off Noyes island to hunt out more King salmon. Word was out that a 50 plus pound King salmon had been caught off the Pinnapple yesterday although we did not go there we still were in the vacinity to catch a big one. We fished pretty hard for 5 hours or so landing 4 King salmon and Joel landed 2 during that time frame plus a few Silver salmon but after about 9 am it was pretty slow. About noon we headed off getting our halibut then from there off where a Coho bite was going on, although we found lots of boats there we stayed off a bit landing 7 or 8 Coho and one nice King salmon. There were some kings caught on many boats and quite a few Coho were caught in different areas around Craig so it appears that more and more Coho are showing up, still not like last year yet and we don’t expect it to be that good for 2014 as 2013 was a unbelievable year as it was. Fishing Alaska salmon off Sumez island was very good for us today as the Sea lion left us alone and we were able to catch 11 King salmon by early morning. We hooked 5 at one time and would have had 6 but got tangled lines. We landed all 5 so that was a great bonus. We watched the Sea lion eating other boats fish and although we had sympathy I felt we ran interferience for the past 2 days loosing 12 King salmon in those two days while other boats lost none. Today was a great day salmon fishing, then we went off for halibut and landed one at 60″ or 109 pounds, having to release it but ended up landing some nice ones right in at 43 and 44 inches which 44″ is the maximum on the slot limit which is 44″ and smaller or 76″ and larger for our area 2C. We did loose one halibut to the sea lion but we did not care about that. Captain Joel Steenstra landed his 12 King salmon so they are tagged out for Kings but we still have 3 left to catch as one of our guests showed up a day late. Please check out our facebook page for more pictures and like us if you will so your friends can see us.

Dale, Rod, Ron, Lloyd, Doug and Dave with a great catch today.

Salmon fishing in Alaska these past few days has continued to be strong as Washington State fish continue to be caught here off the outer coast of Prince of Wales island. We are getting at least half a dozen tagged or fin clipped fish with reports from ADF&G coming back as Colombia river fish. Past two days the Kent Halvorsen group from Alberta Canada has been limiting on King salmon with the largest just under 30 pounds. The Stellar sea lions have been well fed by my boat as Joel seems to be invisible to the salmon eating monsters. We have lost 12 King salmon to them over the past two days and our frustration is at a peak. We blame Kent Halvorsen for his politically incorrect comments about the fish eating mammels and believe they are targeting us based on his statements. We are looking forward to the commercial fleet starting and am sure that the sea lions will get an education here in the next few days, something a charter boat would not dream of doing is educating sea lions. Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska. Fishing off the outer coast today was very good early and then later in the afternoon as well. We landed limits of Kings and had to let a few go as well as landing a 37.2 pound King salmon. Cori had requesteds a 40 pound King salmon when we left the dock this morning for his 10th wedding anniversary and the last salmon of the day was this 37.2 pound fish a few pounds under but a “Tyee” all the same, good job Cori!

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the 21st of June. Today we departed the lodge at 5 am arriving at Cape Felix around 6 am and the salmon still keep flushing onto the beach where much of the sport fleet has been fishing. Granite has also been a high producer of King salmon, limits are easily met despite a 2 fish per day limit. We were done with our limits of King salmon before 8 am after releasing a few smaller fish ending up with our dozen for the day, the largest being 28 pounds. Halibut fishing for us today was a priority as we have struggled producing any amount of respectable fish off Sumez island. Today we spent the rest of the day hunting for halibut and we did find a better source  having to release three large fish one at about 72 inches and several hundred pounds caught by Hoyt Huffman, one about 65″ at about 140 pounds caught by Nate Underwood, and David Underwood landed a nice one as well at 48″ which we also had to release since it was over the 44″ maximum. Congratulations to them all on the nice catch.

I am posting more pictures on our Kingfisher Lodge Facebook site as well as video so check them out at https://www.facebook.com/alaskakingfisherlodge?fref=photo

Captain Chuck with Carl Vedders 178 pound trophy Halibut.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  August 15th we left the lodge with no wind, flat water, overcast skies, and high in the mid 60’s which was a great day to catch Silver salmon and bottom fish. We started locally for our Coho’s and landing a few limits moved on to the outer coast which was a little slower landing the limits of 66 Coho for 11 anglers but completed the job by 10 am then off for our Halibut and Ling cod, yellow eye as we needed a few more to tag out for the group. The group landed a great catch of fish in the 40″ to 45″ size range then Carl Vedders landed a beautiful 69 1/2 inch trophy weighing in at 178 pounds. When he brought it up it had a flasher in it’s mouth as it had eaten a Silver salmon off a troller and got the hoochi and flasher as a memento, so when she came up that flasher was along side her and would have been interesting to see how hard it pulled on the trollers lines. After the excitement from the group from landing the trophy halibut we went off to fish for our ling Cod and Jeff Nelson landed a beautiful trophy ling taping in at just 45″ which is the maximum in the slot limit unless you land one over 55″ which we have not done yet.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska for August 14th we were again greeted by flat calm water as we left the dock at 5 am and returning to our fishing destination from the previous day we started fishing at about 6 am after watching a seiner land a net load of fish. The catching was obviously substantially slower as we could see that out of 5 boats in our vicinity that few fish were being caught compared to yesterday. We stuck it out for an hour or so landing 9 Silvers on our boat and Joel landing only 2. We decided to backtrack to a spot we had done well a few days ago and sure enough they were there so we landed our Silvers by 10:30 and then off to find our Halibut which we were pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of these butts so in no time both boats limited on the beauties and off to the lodge as the boys had emptied the coolers of all beer and bottle of Crown and were getting pretty thirsty.

July 17th sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

Alaska Sport fishing report from Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska fishing the outer coast of Prince of Wales Island in S.E Alaska. Today Captain Joel Steenstra was fishing with 3 anglers. Having hot weather and choppy water  he easily limited on Silver salmon and King salmon, as well as beautiful 48″ and under halibut while releasing one over sized fish. Captain Joel Steenstra continues to out perform most boats with his consistent catches both in salmon but especially halibut and other bottom fish. I rank him one of the top guides in Alaska due to his ability to always find fish,  looking for new areas and always learning about the habitat of the fish.

Chatter on the radio was boats were struggling more to find their fish. Some of this was probably due to the sloppy outside waters keeping anglers from fishing many outside areas. King salmon limits for non resident anglers dropped to one for the rest of the season due to the apparent poor assessment of King salmon numbers by Alaska Department of fish and Game.

Sport fishing report from Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska fishing the outer coast of Prince of Wales Island in S.E Alaska.  Flat calm water and 70 degree temperature is what we dealt with today and limits of salmon by early morning. Although the groups King salmon limits had been filled the previous two days King salmon were still being caught as Joel’s boat landed 4 and my boat landed 2 Kings and releasing all but one on our boat. Salmon runs remain strong in the Craig area and will hopefully continue throughout the summer. Halibut fishing remained good as well as other bottom fish.

July 8th fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska

Sport fishing report from Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska fishing the outer coast of Prince of Wales Island in S.E Alaska. Today the wind was predicted to blow 20 knots SW and that it did so we were more limited on where we might fish. We decided to head for our Coho spot with Blake and his crew and Joel decided to run off shore where he heard there was a good King bite the previous day. We had 30 Coho’s within an hour or so and then needed to find some King salmon. Joel’s report was windy, rain in the face and had not a fish in the box yet. We decided to head to a more protected spot in hopes of finding some King salmon but en-rout  Joel called and let me know he had found a good bite having a double on Kings so we swung and headed his direction and when we arrived he had his 4 Kings and was still marking fish. There were also other boats showing up and landing Kings so we dropped in and soon were landing kings as well and it became chaotic but in a short time landed out limit as well and also Captain Blake with his crew of 4. Halibut fishing was a bit tougher as the waves had not quite met the 8 footers that the weather service had forecasted but was close with a 15 knot wind to make it interesting. We spent 3 hours looking for our limit of halibut and ended up landing some nice under 45″ butts as well as some Yellow Eye and a nice Ling cod we then headed for the dock.
