May 31 thru June 3rd fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales island Craig Alaska. We had a total of 16 guests for our lodge this week which is a bunch for us but fishing and weather was cooperative with us as our folks came from all over the US. The 4 days of fishing with the liberal King salmon limits for the non resident in 2015 of 6 per season ( up from the normal 3) left us with 96 kings to catch in 4 days so as it turned out we landed 95 King salmon in the 4 days which was really an outstanding trip for us all and weather was fantastic as well.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska where catching fish is our business. The past three days was consistant with the earlier trips this month as the Coho continue to move through. We had 14 anglers here at our lodge running 3 boats, all of the boats landed their salmon each day by around 9 am and then were off looking for respectable halibut and bottom fish. Our last day fishing we landed 4 tagged Coho’s and will be sending in the heads for identification of what river system they are from. The previous 2 days landing over 160 Cohowith no tagged fish so we were happy to have these 4 on the last day of their trip. We have 9 more days of fishing at the lodge and are optimistic that the fish will continue to move through making  good trips for the last two groups of the year. For more pictures click on the Facebook emblem to the right. I posted a video of a breaching Humback calf so check it out, it came pretty close to the boat but I missed the best breach when I turned off the camera thinking the show was over.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge and the Craig area. Today my boat had a hard time finding our King salmon while Joel landed 5 King salmon we only landed 3 although we did land 16 Silvers and Joel 20, in all the 7th was a good day but not as good as we would have liked. The 8th turned out to be much better landing our limits of King salmon although we had to work at it all day and landing a few nice Halibut along while salmon fishing. Both boats landed a total of 20 silver salmon and 12 King salmon as well as bottom fish. Largest halibut of the day was 44″. Weather was pretty tough as winds blew from the south at 20 knots as forecasted with a heavy mist of rain pelting us in the face but we stuck it out as other boats left one by one with less than their limits and chatter on the radio sounded as though boats were struggling to get their fish. Silvers still have not shown up in numbers so we are anxious for that. Word from a local lodge that they were traveling north and limiting on silvers but the distance is beyond what we want to travel and expect the Silvers to continue to show up in better numbers as the days pass by. Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the 21st of June. Today we departed the lodge at 5 am arriving at Cape Felix around 6 am and the salmon still keep flushing onto the beach where much of the sport fleet has been fishing. Granite has also been a high producer of King salmon, limits are easily met despite a 2 fish per day limit. We were done with our limits of King salmon before 8 am after releasing a few smaller fish ending up with our dozen for the day, the largest being 28 pounds. Halibut fishing for us today was a priority as we have struggled producing any amount of respectable fish off Sumez island. Today we spent the rest of the day hunting for halibut and we did find a better source  having to release three large fish one at about 72 inches and several hundred pounds caught by Hoyt Huffman, one about 65″ at about 140 pounds caught by Nate Underwood, and David Underwood landed a nice one as well at 48″ which we also had to release since it was over the 44″ maximum. Congratulations to them all on the nice catch.

I am posting more pictures on our Kingfisher Lodge Facebook site as well as video so check them out at https://www.facebook.com/alaskakingfisherlodge?fref=photo

Vandel, Underwood (10)Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the 19th and 20th of June continues to show strong runs of King salmon.  Sitka is showing very strong runs as well as those fish migrate down the outside waters of S.E. Alaska to the Craig area. The 19th and 20th limits were easily had within a few hours or less for most if not all boats. Kingfisher lodge landing their limit of 26 King salmon for two boats in a few hours. Their were two Alaska residents on board so with their 3 King salmon limit per day made for 14 King salmon on Joels boat. Halibut fishing has been tougher for us this summer although John Underwood landed a 100 pound halibut yesteday we had to let it go, and we struggled to find halibut of any size. Check out our facebook page for more photo’s. https://www.facebook.com/alaskakingfisherlodge

Alaska sportfishing report Kingfisher Lodge, June 17th 2014

Alaska salmon fishing at its best! Today we were looking at gale force winds predicted so leaving the dock shortly after 5 am we went straight to the fishing grounds in hopes of landing our salmon as our guests were only fishing a half day. When we reached open water the wind was blowing 25 knots and wave height at about 4 feet, by the time we reached our fishing destination the winds were gusting 30 to 35 knots but the minute we dropped in we hooked up 3 Kings and with a very fast drift we landed 4 Kings. The next two drifts we landed our 12 King salmon and released 4 others with a close to record time of 45 minutes to limit on King salmon of 12 fish. This was also a fiasco with the gusty winds blowing the boat so everyone had to work together to keep from loosing the fish as they ran about under and around the boat loosing only one to the spinning propellers. Back at the dock by 7:50 am!

Back to the dock by 8 am with limits of King salmon! Good Job!

Fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, June 16th 2014

Saal (4)Today we had 12 anglers looking for Alaska King salmon and we needed 24 Kings total. The ocean predictions were 12′ seas so we were not that optimistic we could fish the ocean where we had been doing very well the few days before, but as we neared the ocean it was clear that it wasn’t that bad, the wind was down and the swell was managable. We stopped off Sumez island and withing minutes had 3 Kings on and as time went on more and more boats showed up and everyone was getting their fish and limiting very early. We then headed off to finish our halibut which was accomplished easy enough but no real size to our fish. The largest King of the day was 37.5 pounds and as far as we know leading the King salmon derby.

Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, Friday June 13, 2014

Friday the 13th started out slow with us landing only 3 Kings early on and Joel only needing one King to tag out his guests went north while we were south. Many boats ended up off Sumez island but after several hours of few fish being landed boats started looking off shore as the seas had layed down after the previous days of westerlies. It wasn’t long before chatter on the radio was the Kings were there so off we went and as soon as the baits hit the bottom salmon were on and all boats were limiting in a few hours on King salmon. Friday the 13th ended great for the fishermen and not so good for the fish.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig, Prince of Wales Island, Alaska.  August 19th was again forecasted for heavy seas and 20 knot winds although we fished on the inside and kept out of the big water and my boat landed our Silver salmon in close to town while Joel and his crew went and tested the outside waters. They were happy to find a nice spot with a large swell but no wind and pleasant fishing with great catching of big Coho’s landing their limits in short order. Halibut fishing was again good with our boat landing a nice limit of  35″ to 45″ butts, and Joel’s boat landing a nice 68″ 170 pound halibut by Talon Stephan. Joel was guiding the Stephan family from North Dakota for their family fishing vacation and they said it was their best family vacation ever which says quite a bit for this area and their captain.
