Prince of Wales sportfishing report for the Craig area for August 3rd was good catching for Kingfisher Charters and Lodge. The Jeanette Elaine was the only boat out today with Dario and his son Neil DeGhethaldi. We started in for silvers first off landing 6 silver salmon in about 45 minutes. We then headed to the outside of Noyes island where we hooked 4 king salmon, landed 3 releasing one. Reports from the trollers is that they are shaking lots of King Salmon but not many Silver salmon out there as yet off shore.

Halibut fishing was next on the list and so we headed to an old spot off shore for our 37″ limit. Catching was slower than hoped but we finished up on those after about one hour settling for a couple at about 33 inches long. Later in the day we fished some rock piles landing limits of black sea bass, and yellow eye. Dario also landed a 120 pound halibut based on his length which we let go since the maximum halibut retained on a charter boat is 37″. So ended a 4 day trip with Dario and his two sons. We hope to see them back again in the future.

August second Prince of Wales sportfishing report from Kingfisher Lodge in Craig alaska is that king salmon fishing was strong today landing 10 king salmon between two boats limiting on king salmon. Silver salmon again was slower than it has been the past 3 weeks but limits were still caught despite having to work harder for them. Weather was sunny skies, calm winds, calm seas…YES!

Prince of Wales sportfishing report for Craig Alaska salmon and halibut fishing is that catching remains strong through today. Craig Alaska Charter fleet continued to limit on silver salmon as well as king salmon throughout the area. Although reports of the trollers seem to be low numbers of fish on the outside our catch rate is very high for the inside and coastal area. Limits on both our boats were completed by early morning as well as halibut limits. No rock fish or bottom fish were targeted by either group today. Weather remains calm with sunny skies this afternoon. Fishing on the outside of Noyes Island was very pleasant.

July 29th

Larry Stapleton with his 30.2 pound king salmon

July 29th Prince of Wales fishing report for Kingfisher lodge in Craig Alaska began at 4:30 am departure landing the first king salmon and silver salmon by 5 am. The Trinity guided by Joel Steenstra landed 5 king salmon and 20 or so silver salmon by 6:30 am or so. The Jeanette Elaine was nearby and landing a total of 25 silver salmon but not one king salmon so we headed northwest by 6:45 am and catching our halibut went back to where we had been catching king salmon the previous day. We eventually landed 2 nice king salmon the largest by Larry was 30.2 pounds, good job Larry. So the group from Naples Florida landed a total of 240 silver salmon, 36 king salmon, and 40 halibut for their trip. Until next year same time same place.

July 28th

July 28th 10 fishermen left Kingfisher Charters and Lodge dock near Craig Alaska and headed for a early morning bite not far from the lodge. Today both boats headed to the same spot and started landing silver salmon while using the mooching technique. 5 persons on each boat landed about 15 coho’s in a hour or so and loosing one king on the Jeanette Elaine. We then headed for Hog rock which arriving to a flood of Waterfall resort boats we stuck out fishing there watching some kings getting landed but only landing 2 silvers ourself in a hour of fishing. From there we went out to land our halibut and returned to where we had been and began landing kings and silvers. We finished at 1 pm landing 60 coho’s and 8 king salmon between the two boats for the day. The salmon report for the Craig area seems to be a drop in salmon in the general area and hopefully we will get a flood of new fish here in the next few days. The report from off shore is not many silvers showing up as the trollers have not been doing well. We cross our fingers and hope for the best. No photo today as the guys didn’t want one as they were all ready for a drink and could not wait.

July 27th

July 27th we left Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for Diamond point with the Jeanette Elaine in search of Silver salmon and King salmon, while the Trinity headed for Hog rock for the same. The Jeanette Elaine crew had one king salmon and 29 silver salmon by 7:30 am so catching was very good for the silver salmon. We were using the mooching technique which of course is a proven and very effective method which gives the angler most enjoyment and frustration at times. The Trinity in the mean time had two king salmon and 10 coho’s about the same time so we headed up to see if we could get our limit of King salmon. We arrived at Hog rock where there were about 20 boats fishing pretty close together. We worked the area over for an hour or so then headed out for halibut returning to land one more king for a total of 3 kings landed one released for undersized. The Trinity landed 5 king salmon with the largest being 30.3 pounds. So limits of salmon and halibut were the order of the day.

July 26th we left Kingfisher dock at 5:15 am and since we had to wait for a couple of the guys to fly into Craig early in the morning since their flight was canceled we decided to fish close to home to pick them up at 9 am. The Jeanette Elaine stayed in close and the Trinity went out to the Tree off Noyes island with their crew. By 9 am the Jeanette Elaine had 3 kings and 18 silvers and came in to pick up the other 2 fishermen. We then went back to where we had been and picked up about another 5 silvers or so then called Joel on the Trinity and he was doing well on king salmon and silver salmon out west of us near the Cape. The group on the Trinity had limited on king salmon and silver salmon and headed for their halibut. We headed that direction and went to Hog Rock landing 2 kings and half a dozen silvers. Then went out halibut fishing landing our halibut and then on in to find more silver salmon which we did landing several quads which put us up to 35 coho’s for the day and 5 king salmon. Thus ended our day of salmon and halibut fishing near Craig both boats landing limits of salmon and halibut.

July 24th

June 24th we left Kingfisher lodge at our regular 5 am departure arriving again at the Tree spot. When we arrived we spotted a troller working the same area. This troller is notorius for despising charter boats and makes a point of running through groups of them. So half hour into our fishing Art Wiper hooks a very large king salmon which just so happens to be when our troller friend is bearing down on us. The fish decides to head for the troller intent on spooling the reel which he almost does but gets tangled in the trollers gear. We proceeded to follow the troller hoping to somehow get the king salmon loose of the trolling gear but no luck. Once the guy running the troller came out to see why we were almost aboard his boat there were a few words exchanged about harrassing sportfishermen….. and then we went back to fishing. Day ended up with both boats landing limits of silver salmon, and halibut and shy one king salmon each. Great trip for both groups and we look forward to seeing them all next year. I did not have a picture for the Trinity group for the last day as they got into the lodge before we did.

July 22nd

June 22nd we had a total of 11 guests with the Jeff Wiper group and the Scott Wetstone/Al Hansen group all regular guests at Kingfisher Lodge in Craig. Jeff’s group fishing on the Jeanette Elaine with myself, and Scott, Al, and the boys fishing with Joel on the Trinity. Day one started out with Blake as a guide for the Trinity as Joel could not guide that day. Blake went to the Tree spot, catching for them was hot right off the start landing kings and silvers. The Jeanette Elaine had gone to Hog rock hoping for a replay of the previous day’s fishing but that wasn’t happening so we headed for the tree and started catching. The Trinity group was ahead of our boat catching and they finished with their limit of king salmon and silver salmon early in the morning. We continued on and ended up landing 3 or 4 king salmon and limits of silver salmon and halibut as well but arrived at the dock later than the Trinity group.
