Craig Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge August 25th thru the 30th.

Dennis Carson group with a impressive catch of halibut and salmon.

Craig Alaska Charter fishing for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales island the past week has been pretty steady considering the weather last week when we experienced high winds and high seas making fishing more difficult. Our boats had 4 GAF to catch and so one day limits of Coho were sacrificed to make time to catch the big halibut. Captain Braden Harding landed his two GAF on the first day plus most of his Coho limit and Captain Nils Backstrome landed his two GAF on the second day of the 3 day trip as well as his Coho limit, Captain Sean Curry landed his limits on day one and three but day two was cut short due to the high winds and rain the guests wanted to come in.  The last group of the season is only comprised of 4 anglers and Captain Nils Backstrome is guiding them so yesterday and today he landed his limits of Coho and bottom fish including the black sea bass. He has one more day ending the season but I have on doubt he will accomplish what he has to do landing those limits as weather has been outstanding the past few days and the 10 day forecast

The Tlustos and Spell couples with another impressive day of fishing.

Danny Sturgil group with a great day of fishing.

The Dennis Carsen group with more GAF fish day one.

The Tlustos, Spell couples with Captain Sean Curry and our grandkids.

remains very good for wind and sun! Thanks to all for reading my report for the summer although I was late in starting I did keep it consistent for the summer. (Jeff Lundberg from SSRAA who runs the Klawock Hatchery gave me some crap for being “Lazy”) so thanks Jeff for getting on me and I want to thank SSRAA, Jeff Lundberg and his great staff for producing a outstanding run of Coho salmon for Prince of Wales sport fishing in the Craig area as well as Sea Otter sound area. Jeff tells me that as of the day of this writing the Klawock hatchery is responsible for 100,000 Coho contribution to the fishery with 9,000 of those fish to sport, that’s 75,000 more than the next closest hatchery! Great job Klawock hatchery!!

Wishing everyone a great rest of the year and look forward to all those returning guests to Craig Alaska and Kingfisher Lodge.

Prince of Wales sport fishing report August 20th, 2019

Craig Alaska charter fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on the 20th of August 2019. The past 3 days fishing was very good except one day with strong northwest winds which made offshore fishing more difficult or out of the question for most anglers. Coho fishing remains strong at this point with limits being had by early morning most days. The Coho’s are gaining size and some off shore fish yesterday were quite impressive in size and Captain Harding found a large school of Coho off shore while black sea bass fishing, he said he couldn’t get through the Coho’s to get to the sea bass, that’s a great problem to have! Halibut fishing is good off shore but much more difficult inshore due to much pressure over the years is my guess. Next three days will be tough weather days as northwest gales to 45 miles per hour are in the forecast with 15 foot seas so it will be tough fishing for any offshore hopes. Coho fishing should be very doable though despite the wind and rain.

The Pat Radecki group with a great catch for the day.

The Bruce Berry group with a great catch!

The Carl Postma family with a great fishing trip!

Kingfisher Lodge fishing report August 1st thru the 3rd.

Jacob Wipf with a very unusual catch!

The Jake Wipf group with a nice catch!

The Lyle Randon group with a great catch of Ling cod, halibut and Coho.

The Strawn group with a great catch of Lings, Coho and Halibut!

Craig Alaska charter fishing on Prince of Wales island for the 1st of August has been steady for Coho and bottom fishing. Although the Coho salmon are not in great numbers our boats have been limiting most days but the fish are very localized and in only a few areas. Charter boats that get antsy may fall far short of landing limits of these Silver salmon so perseverance pays the bills on that number. Trollers are now shut down until the 13th I believe which will help numbers a bit for the sport fishermen. Many of the highline commercial trollers (my son in law included) normally would average say 200 per day are now struggling to get 75 to 100 which indicates low numbers in the ocean which is a bit concerning. At any rate we are happy to be able to produce limits or close to limits each day for our guests and look forward to seeing the rest of you that will be coming later this month. You can check out our Facebook page for more pictures and thanks for reading my report!

The John Stone-David Finley group with a nice catch of fish.

Tom Olvitt family with a great catch of fish.

Jared, John and Janet Braithwaite with a great catch of fish!!

A fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge near Craig Alaska for August 21st thru the 23rd. Coho or Silver salmon fishing remained strong the past three days with our boats limiting on silver salmon in a few hours and many other boats doing the same if fishing in good areas. The commercial troll fleet had a opener and they found some good fishing off the outer coast with a mix of Silver salmon as well although Coho fishing for the trollers is considered slow for them this year, a boat that might average 200 a day on a good season might be down to 100 plus fish for the day so far this year. ADF & G tag reporting for the Coho’s we are bringing in to our lodge are returning to the Klawock hatchery on the Klawock river operated by SSRAA, again we are grateful for this contribution to the local fishery. Bottom fishing remains good although halibut fishing isn’t like in the old days where you went to your spot and dropped in got your fish and moved on it has been slower this year and most all the boats have had to work at their halibut limits to land respectable fish just under the 38″ mark. Ling cod fishing remains strong with big Lings still fairly easy to find. Thanks for reading my reports, only 3 more days for us here at Kingfisher.

Prince of Wales sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge Craig Alaska August 5-7, 2018.

The Idaho group with limits of fish including GAF halibut.

The Seth Mitchner group with a great catch of fish.

Idaho boys with another successful day.

Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge located in Craig Alaska has been a sportfishing lodge since 1994 a family run operation specializing in ocean salmon and halibut fishing trips including bottom fish of different varieties. This report is for August 5-7. The past 3 days weather was as good as it gets with sunny skies and flat calm water. Coho or Silver salmon fishing which what is the focus this time of year has been spotty, meaning one day very good the next maybe not so good. It seems that within most guests 3 day trip they will get one really good day and the other days will be partial limits of Coho. King salmon have been good considering a non resident is only allowed one King salmon for his trip after August 1st but if given the time it is possible to fill that limit. Bottom fishing and Halibut fishing has been good but we are traveling more distance to accomplish that goal. The retention of Yellow eye and all n0n-pelagic rock fish are closed throughout August, although Pelagic rock fish are open which would be your black sea bass. I will let the pictures speak for how the past groups did these past 3 days. Thanks for reading my report.

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 23rd thru the 25th, 2018

The Wang-Shenck group with a nice display of fish!

The Volmer-Rasmasson group with another great catch.

Young-Branske group with a great catch of fish.

ADF&G numbers for Commercial troll per boat.

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 23rd thru the 25th for Kingfisher Lodge. Last three days started good and got better by the last day as more silvers and kings started to move in. We were landing close to limits of Coho’s and a few king salmon and some boats were limiting on King salmon in the Craig charter fleet. We spent each day looking for GAF fish so limited ourselves to more salmon fishing but landing 5 GAF halibut in the 3 days. Fish and Game graph shows Coho’s meeting 2013 returns for the past 4 days this week and we did see the increase in the sport fishing as well. Thanks for reading my report and we are hoping that the fish keep coming!

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 20th thru the 22nd, 2018

The Stutz-Hutcherson families with a great catch of fish!

alaska trophy fishing

The Stutz-Hutcherson families with a great day of GAF fishing.

Craig Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for the above dates. Coho fishing increased dramatically the past three days with our boats landing limits of Coho each day and I believe most boats were getting limits of Coho, thanks to the Klawock Coho hatchery located on the Klawock river. This hatchery puts out 5 million Coho and our appreciation for this facility is beyond bounds as without it Craig’s Coho fishing would be a much reduced fishery, so we are very glad to have these fish suddenly show up (owned and operated by SSRAA). We now are hoping that the Coho’s continue to flood into the inside waters outside the Craig area. Thanks for reading the post.

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 7th thru the 13th, 2018

Dowdle group with a GAF day fishing!

Craig Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge for the week of July 7th thru the 13th. I missed the first group report and now combining the two groups reports for the above dates. King salmon fishing remained slow but we were able to limit on the one King salmon per guest last two groups. By the second group arriving on the 10th we had one slower day and finished strong landing all King salmon limits and the best two days were 15 Coho and 13 Coho for one boat. Each day is a new day and one day we will see limits of Coho or Silver salmon. Some of the commercial trollers are landing up to 100 per day off shore so they are on their way. Bottom fishing remains strong and good halibut fishing depending on water conditions and where we are as far as getting to the halibut spots. The boats are out today so will give a report in 3 days coming. The top picture is the Steve Delamore group with a great catch of fish. Thanks for reading my reports.

The Wes Goldstein goup with a great catch of fish!

Wiper/Dahlgren group with a nice catch!

The Jerry Karlin “Cornhusker” group with a great catch!

Craig Alaska fishing report for July 2nd thru the 5th of July, 2018.

Carl Postma group with a great day of fishing!

Craig Alaska fishing report for the 2nd thru the 5th of July. First of all we had beautiful weather and ocean conditions the past 3 days and everyone had a great time enjoying the beauty S.E. has to offer. King and Silver salmon fishing has been extra tough the past 3 days although all 16 guests landed their limits of King salmon only 5 Silvers or Coho were caught. Bottom fishing for rockfish and Ling cod is very good though saving our bacon and keeping the guests happy landing limits of these fish they have sometimes overlooked in the past due to larger numbers of salmon around. The commercial troll opening was on July 1st and they have also been way down on their catches and surely will affect the sport fisherman to a degree. We are optimistic that more fish will begin to show up as traditionally is the case but as of yesterday it was a struggle. Halibut fishing for the 38″ and under has also been tough off Noyes island, there seems to be plenty of the big ones around but unless a person has purchased a GAF fish they must be released. Looking forward to more fish coming in, stay tuned for the next report, thanks for reading.

The John Wilson family with a great catch. Justin and Jaren both landed 100 plus pound halibut but had to let them go.

The Giraud family with a great catch of fish!

Prince of Wales sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska June 30th 2018

Fishing report for June 27th thru the 29th of June 2018. The past 3 days King salmon fishing was good enough landing 45 out of 48 King salmon for the 16 guests. King salmon have been in most traditional areas off Noyes, Baker and Sumez islands with Sumez island being the most productive. The largest King I have heard of was caught by Catch a King charters at 50 lbs..  Our largest King salmon was caught yesterday at 37 pounds with a 35 with it. Bottom fishing remains strong landing limits of Ling cod and Yellow eye as well as black sea bass. Weather has remained cool with some wind but ocean conditions have been very tolerable.

The Canadians with their big King salmon, Congrats Lloyd and Dave!

John Underwood group with a GAF 100 pound halibut!

Glen Williams group with a great catch of fish!
