Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska. Today we headed off Noyes island to hunt out more King salmon. Word was out that a 50 plus pound King salmon had been caught off the Pinnapple yesterday although we did not go there we still were in the vacinity to catch a big one. We fished pretty hard for 5 hours or so landing 4 King salmon and Joel landed 2 during that time frame plus a few Silver salmon but after about 9 am it was pretty slow. About noon we headed off getting our halibut then from there off where a Coho bite was going on, although we found lots of boats there we stayed off a bit landing 7 or 8 Coho and one nice King salmon. There were some kings caught on many boats and quite a few Coho were caught in different areas around Craig so it appears that more and more Coho are showing up, still not like last year yet and we don’t expect it to be that good for 2014 as 2013 was a unbelievable year as it was. Alaska sport fishing report for the Craig area and Kingfisher Lodge for the 9th, and 10th of July.  The 9th of July we had one group of 5 fishing a half day so we headed off Baker island since we had done pretty well the day before so heading back we began fishing in the early afternoon and had a great catch of King salmon and Silver salmon by 4 pm. We caught 24 Coho and 5 Kings plus a limit of small halibut caught while salmon fishing. There were 6 boats there and everyone was catching King salmon and silver salmon so was pretty darn good for a few hours time.

Today on the 10th of July with 2 boats of 9 anglers we headed again off Baker island and fishing the same spot of the previous day, we landed a King salmon early on and a few silver salmon but in time it was becoming apparent that it might be early afternoon again before the fish showed up. There were 10 to 15 boats that showed up with us as word was out that there was fish caught the previous day but within a few hours boats started going off shore into deeper water looking for salmon, which is what we did. We ended up landing a dozen silver salmon and a limit of King salmon. Captain Joel Steenstra on the Trinity did about the same on salmon and we all went halibut fishing landing nice limits of halibut with a few near the 44″ mark and the others in the 38 to 42 inch size range. We went back to our good spot of the day before hoping the afternoon bite might develope but all we caught was more King salmon and a few silver salmon. We called it a day and headed home. Word on the radio was limits of King salmon for most boats and half limits for Coho or Silver salmon. See more photo’s on our Facebook page.

Enjoying the time together around the fire despite the inclimate weather, truely hearty souls.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge and the Craig area. Today my boat had a hard time finding our King salmon while Joel landed 5 King salmon we only landed 3 although we did land 16 Silvers and Joel 20, in all the 7th was a good day but not as good as we would have liked. The 8th turned out to be much better landing our limits of King salmon although we had to work at it all day and landing a few nice Halibut along while salmon fishing. Both boats landed a total of 20 silver salmon and 12 King salmon as well as bottom fish. Largest halibut of the day was 44″. Weather was pretty tough as winds blew from the south at 20 knots as forecasted with a heavy mist of rain pelting us in the face but we stuck it out as other boats left one by one with less than their limits and chatter on the radio sounded as though boats were struggling to get their fish. Silvers still have not shown up in numbers so we are anxious for that. Word from a local lodge that they were traveling north and limiting on silvers but the distance is beyond what we want to travel and expect the Silvers to continue to show up in better numbers as the days pass by. Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 6th, 2014. The next three days we have 12 anglers looking to catch limits of King salmon, silver salmon, halibut and other bottom fish and today we fished off Noyes island. Joel’s boat landed their 6 King salmon pretty early in the morning while we were at 3 for much of the morning then going off Baker island we were able to find a nice bunch of King salmon as well as Silvers landing a total of 25 silvers for two boats which is quite a bit less than last year at this time. Our halibut we landed while salmon fishing getting some nice 38 to 40″ fish.

Alaska sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July. Today we headed out with the Rodgers family of 9 anglers on two boats with Captain Joel Steenstra having 4 boys and two adults and myself having 3 adults and my son in law. We started out in fishing on the inside waters and Joel and his crew landed 6 nice King salmon before we knew what happened and ourselves only having one. They of course had to come by so we could take pictures of them as they boasted their proud catch. So being soundly beaten by a bunch of kids we humbly left that spot and headed off Baker island looking for a few nice Kings to redeem ourselves as there are always 4 quarters to a game, at least in football. We didn’t outdo them in size but we did get 4 nice King salmon and 18 Coho or Silver salmon as well as 4 nice halibut so we felt really good about the day as it ended. Joel and his crew ended up with a really nice catch as well with 4 Coho, 6 Yellow eye, a Ling cod and limit of Halibut and of course their 6 King salmon. Overall sportfishing in the Craig area was very good catching for King salmon and Coho seems to be picking up.

Alaska sport fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska. The past few days fishing was pretty good considering the commercial trollers were out in numbers offshore catching King salmon off the outer coast of Prince of Wales island. With King salmon limits for non-resident sportfishermen reduced to one a day from two as of July 1st. we had an easier time landing limits of King salmon early. We sportfished some inside spots the past few days and also a few off shore trying to avoid the Sea lion problem off the outer islands landing our limits of King salmon and some silver salmon. Most boats were complaining of the Sea lions taking many fish yesterday and today and as we have had our belly’s full of losing fish to them we were happy to have avoided them. It sounds as though most boats are limiting on King salmon in the Craig area but Coho’s are less abundant but seem to be showing up more each day. The last few days we have landed about half a dozen Coho per boats. Above photo shows the Mike Rodgers family with 10 year old Brady with his 26.5 King salmon. Dale, Rod, Ron, Lloyd, Doug and Dave with a great catch today.

Salmon fishing in Alaska these past few days has continued to be strong as Washington State fish continue to be caught here off the outer coast of Prince of Wales island. We are getting at least half a dozen tagged or fin clipped fish with reports from ADF&G coming back as Colombia river fish. Past two days the Kent Halvorsen group from Alberta Canada has been limiting on King salmon with the largest just under 30 pounds. The Stellar sea lions have been well fed by my boat as Joel seems to be invisible to the salmon eating monsters. We have lost 12 King salmon to them over the past two days and our frustration is at a peak. We blame Kent Halvorsen for his politically incorrect comments about the fish eating mammels and believe they are targeting us based on his statements. We are looking forward to the commercial fleet starting and am sure that the sea lions will get an education here in the next few days, something a charter boat would not dream of doing is educating sea lions. Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska. Fishing off the outer coast today was very good early and then later in the afternoon as well. We landed limits of Kings and had to let a few go as well as landing a 37.2 pound King salmon. Cori had requesteds a 40 pound King salmon when we left the dock this morning for his 10th wedding anniversary and the last salmon of the day was this 37.2 pound fish a few pounds under but a “Tyee” all the same, good job Cori!

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, in Craig Alaska for June 24th. Today we left the dock at 5 am and headed off Cape Felix since that has been the best salmon fishing in the Craig area. Today was good fishing but we had to work for our fish while Joel finished up early on his 12 King salmon we were still at 7 and needed 5 more. The bite seemed to slow down and as there had been many boats from the local lodges they were beginning to thin out either by limiting or getting impatient and looking elsewhere. We stuck it out and in the end there was only a handfull of boats but the bite came on again later and we were able to finish up with a great catch of Alaska salmon.

Jory, Bob, Duane, Travis, Bob, Conan, Jeff, Hoyt, John, John, Dave and Nate with a great catch of fish.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for the 21st of June. Today we departed the lodge at 5 am arriving at Cape Felix around 6 am and the salmon still keep flushing onto the beach where much of the sport fleet has been fishing. Granite has also been a high producer of King salmon, limits are easily met despite a 2 fish per day limit. We were done with our limits of King salmon before 8 am after releasing a few smaller fish ending up with our dozen for the day, the largest being 28 pounds. Halibut fishing for us today was a priority as we have struggled producing any amount of respectable fish off Sumez island. Today we spent the rest of the day hunting for halibut and we did find a better source  having to release three large fish one at about 72 inches and several hundred pounds caught by Hoyt Huffman, one about 65″ at about 140 pounds caught by Nate Underwood, and David Underwood landed a nice one as well at 48″ which we also had to release since it was over the 44″ maximum. Congratulations to them all on the nice catch.

I am posting more pictures on our Kingfisher Lodge Facebook site as well as video so check them out at https://www.facebook.com/alaskakingfisherlodge?fref=photo
