Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, August 4th, 2012

The Seim-Soulen group from Boise Idaho with a great catch of fish!

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska, August 4th, 2012 was another great day for salmon fishing and mooching as the Coho runs remain strong on the outside and inside waters around the Craig area. Boats around Noyes island were all limiting on Silver salmon early in the day and some landing King salmon. The ocean was settling down with no wind on the water but still built up a bit from the previous days wind and large tides. The Jeanette Elaine fished inside Noyes island limiting on our coho by 10 am but the Trinity limited on silvers in record time including a nice 23 pound King salmon caught by Ray Stevenson and they limited by 9 am or so within an hour after arriving to the rock pile.

Halibut fishing is also remaining strong as the groups on both boats landed nice halibut with Phil Soulen landed a nice 69″ butt and the rest of the group landing nice size butts as shown by the group photo above. There were at least 5 over-under sized fish that were in the 75-100 pound range that had to be released. The remaining halibut were ranging from 45″ down to 38″.

Bob, Richard, Lyle, and Tom with a great August catch of Alaska salmon

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska August 2nd 2012 on Prince of Wales island. This morning we woke to 10 mph winds and overcast skies with light rain. We went straight out to Noyes island where we started fishing for salmon spending 3 hours getting limits of Silver salmon while Joel and the crew on the Trinity went out to the Rock Pile hoping to get some more King salmon, which they did as Tom Giblock of Gilette Wyoming hooked a 4o pound King which took him close to a half hour to land. Once they had the King in the boat they continued fishing at the rock pile, but landing only a few silvers decided to get their halibut and then move to inside waters to look for more salmon.

While we were out catching our halibut they went into St. Joe island and landed their limits of Silver salmon and one more King salmon getting in on a wide open Silver bite. It appears that the Silver salmon runs are remaining steady and we only hope that the run continues to remain strong for the next couple of weeks.

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 31st & August 1st, 2012

Joni, Bob, & Don

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska and Prince of Wales island for July 31st and August 1st. July 31st the weather was predicted to blow up to 30 knots and seas building to 8 feet and the weather man is always right when he predicts wind and rain it seems. We got our limits of Silver salmon and Halibut yesterday but had to pound our way back to the lodge at a modest speed of 15 knots or so and we were all soaking wet due to the torrential rain and pretty beat up by the time we tied the boats to the dock, not pictures as everyone headed for hot showers and stiff drinks!

Richard, Bob, Tom, & Lyle

August 1st we woke to the flags draped around the flag pole and not a ripple on the water or any rain. We went straight to St. Joseph island and picked away at our Silver salmon which by 9:30 or so had close to our limits of those and went out to land our Halibut. Joni Pahor landed a nice 100 pound halibut but had to let it go since it was under the 68″ required by the IPHC. We landed 2 nice 44″ “Butts” though and then one smaller one as well as a nice 38″ Ling cod. From there we headed up to the Rock Pile to try our luck at King salmon and were rewarded with one nice 23 pound King caught by Don Pahor. Joel’s boat landed 4 nice King salmon and limits of Silver salmon, one nice halibut they had to release and 4 nice 40 pounders to finish the day including some nice yellow eye. Lyle Randon had said he was waiting for a nice King salmon and true to his word landed a nice one topping off his day.

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 28th & 29th, 2012

Cannon group with a nice days catch of halibut and Alaska salmon

Alaska Salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 28th, and the 29th of 2012.The last couple of days the fishing around Noyes island has been very good on the outside waters of the island at the “rockpile” and “Pineapple” as all boats limiting on Silver salmon quite early with a smattering of King salmon being caught as well with some King salmon in the 50 pound and larger size. We have been fishing some other spots keeping from the crowds and landing limits of Coho or Silver salmon and a King salmon here and there. Silver salmon fishing remains strong in the Craig area as the fish are moving into the local waters of Craig and you see many boats fishing the local areas near town as well as large amounts of boats on the outer coast. Halibut fishing has also remained strong and nice slot limit size halibut (45″) seem quite abundant as we catch our limit without much effort so we are hoping that the stocks are rebuilding and will remain strong and continue to build with the present limits in place.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska on July 26th was without wind, but was partly foggy throughout the area. Silver salmon fishing was red hot in all areas around Noyes island and imagine that the other islands had their fair share of fish as well. Kingfisher Lodge boats limited on Silver salmon fairly early this morning but only catching one nice 30 pound King salmon. Jia from China landed his first King salmon and his first Alaska salmon weighing in at 32 pounds. Sam Brumal landed one nice Halibut at over one hundred pounds and another at 44 inches or about 39 pounds on his 78 birthday, Good job Sam. Halibut fishing has steadily improved and quite easy to land 30 pound and larger halibut if weather and a little time is available to fish for them. This is encouraging as it appears that the cutbacks that IPHC made in 2011 has helped out considerably with nicer fish showing up. Today we landed 72 silver salmon, 12 halibut and one King salmon for 12 anglers.

Prince of Wales and S.E. Alaska fishing report Kingfisher Lodge in Craig Alaska for July 21st and 22nd, 2012. The 21st sport fishing for silver salmon was very good as all boats were limiting on them early in the day and trollers are doing very well as far as can be told. King salmon were a bit slimmer as we landed only 3 King salmon for 14 anglers at Kingfisher Lodge but landed limits of silvers, halibut and rock fish.

July 22nd started out slower for Silver salmon but got good as the day or tide progressed landing a total of 8 King salmon and limits of silvers, halibut and bottom fish. Chatter on the radio was all boats were limiting on silvers and King salmon were probably 2 per boat with a few big ones being caught. Weather for the day was better than we all expected with flat calm water on the ocean as the forcast was for 20 knots NW winds. We expect that Alaska salmon fishing will continue to improve as the season progresses.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 14th

David Stutz group.

Prince of Wales & S.E. Alaska fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 12th. Sportfishing on Prince of Wales island in the Craig area was a bit slower today as not only did fishing die down a bit but the N.W. winds picked up to 25 knots which limited areas to fish. We started out fishing the inside and many boats found quick morning bites that landed them some of their King salmon and Silver salmon but most of those petered out for the most part and many boats came home shy of limits. We for our part ended up landing 3 Kings, 12 Coho, 6 nice halibut and one Ling cod. Joel landed 4 Kings, 10 Coho, and half his limit of Halibut due to landing up to 8 large skates which took up a bunch of his time. We ended up landing some nice halibut but on one which we estimated between 75 and 100 pounds an extra large bull sea lion took our halibut from 200 feet of water and up to the surface it came out about 500 yards or more. David Stutz brought his Shimano TLD 50 two speed reels and thats what he hooked it on thankfully but after about a half hour of pulling against that big old bull all he got back was part of the head. He said it was better than fighting a large marlin. So check out the picture of what was left…not much but lips and some gill plate. Had a great day though but with the winds building and seas mounting by the time we were done it was blowing 25 knots and 6 to 7 foot seas on the outside waters and we had 4 in the cabin and 2 out fishing. Tomorrow will be to rough to fish those outside waters I am pretty sure.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Kingfisher Lodge, Craig Alaska July 12th

Whitefoot group enjoying a great day on the water

Sportfishing report for Kingfisher lodge on Prince of Wales Island, Craig Alaska July 12th, 2012. Today was a great day to be a sport fisherman or a landlubber since the water was great for both as water was flat calm on the wide Pacific Ocean and light winds made it easy to be a ocean fisherman or angler. The west coast of Baker island was the choice for most charter fishermen and their clients as the salmon fishing there had been good the past few days. The 11th or previous day the Orca or Killer whales made their appearance and covered the whole Noyes and Baker islands probably laying waste to a fair amount of salmon so on the following morning it seemed all boats were marking fish on their sounders but biters were few and far between. Was it the Orca that put the fear into the fish was much speculation with us all…as it was if you stuck with it you finished up on your Chinook limit and did pretty well on Coho limits as well. Halibut fishing remained good and if you put effort into the fishery can come out pretty good with effort and a bit of luck. So the photographs show nice halibut from our groups and happy anglers were the result of the effort put forth.

Sportfishing report for Kingfisher lodge on Prince of Wales Island, Craig Alaska July 11th, 2012 was a great day to be an Angler especially if your name is Larry Whitefoot who landed a wopper 49 pound King salmon, unfortunately he didn’t buy a King salmon derby ticket so might have been a little richer if he had of.
My boat went to east Addington and landed one King salmon and 14 or so silver salmon, not counting about 75 small halibut that we had to let loose. Joel did the same but landed one or two King salmon and 3 limits  of silver salmon or 18, as well Rafael who also landed several limits of silvers and one King salmon. We all ended up going south to Granite point where boats were limiting on King salmon very early but as we had gone later the bite slowed down. Our boat landed the remainder of our King salmon which was 6 and then went out for halibut which we landed 6 nice ones in a couple hours fishing. Joel did the same landing some nice 45″ halibut and having to release 5 over one hundred pounds as they did not fall into the 68″ and over limit. Rafael’s boat also went out halibut fishing landing his limit of nice halibut.

Sooo…the story of Larry’s big king as told by his buddies goes like this. Larry was feeling pretty “chummy” due to the flu bug and after a two hour nap came out made 2 casts and hooked the big one weighed in at the dock as 49 pounds. Rafael was the skipper so hats off to both of them.

Alaska salmon fishing report for Prince of Wales, Craig alaska July10th

Mike, Bill, Curtis, Chuck, Dan, Jens, and Chuck

Sportfishing report for Kingfisher Lodge on Prince of Wales in Craig Alaska for July 10th started out with a South West wind so we sped up to Noyes island where we had fished the previous trip while Joel and Rapheal went off Baker island looking for salmon. We started out landing a couple king salmon fairly soon then a third but that slowed down so we moved on down the beach where other boats were landing fish and we started landing silvers and King salmon although the baby halibut were in such prodigious numbers that it wore me and all my leaders out trying to keep releasing them and rebaiting. By 11:30 we had 19 coho’s and 6 King salmon so were happy with that. Joel and Raphael had limited on Kings with their groups and moved on to Halibut as we did as well.
