Fishing

Sportfishing report for Prince of Wales Island, 21st of June, 2025.

3 more groups have came and spent a wonderful three days here at Kingfisher Lodge. We want to thank the Questa, Clegg and Cunningham group for finally bringing some good weather. For the first time this season we had three consecutive days with very favorable water conditions.

The boats were able to find King Salmon around Baker and Noyes Island. All three boats spreading out and fishing different areas over the three days of fishing. The fishing is still fair to good. The nicer grade of kings showed up on the last day of fishing with a couple hitting the decks in the mid 20 lbs range.

Halibut fishing stays very good. All boats getting limits with nice “turkey” sized halibut which will keep our guests fed all thru winter.

A big congratulations to the Clegg Group who were able to hook into a 65 lbs GAF halibut which tipped the scale at 130 lbs.

The most excitement was had by Mike on Captain Nils’s boat who hooked into a Salmon shark. It was believed to be around 7 to 8 feet long. The shark drug the boat over a mile off-shore but they were never able to get it within 50 feet of the boat. It was hooked on a “mooching” rig, and the 40 lbs test leader did not stand a chance against the abrasive skin of the shark and after about a 20 minute fight the leader finally broke.

Salmon sharks spend the winters off the coast of California but migrate up to Alaska to fed on the salmon that are returning to the streams. They are a fairly uncommon sighting in Southeast Alaska as they just migrate thru and tend to congregate in the bays of Prince William Sound.

We now keep our fingers crossed for this favorable weather to continue.
